Is There A Slot For Guehi At Liverpool As City Circle?
Having seen Liverpool storm to the Premier League title in the 2024/25 campaign in manager Arne Slot's debut season at Anfield to pick up trophy No 20 as he replaced the retiring Jurgen Klopp, it has been a very poor start to the year of 2025/26 by our standards.
Of course, defending a title with the expectations and pressure that adds to a club and the players themselves in once thing, but there is also the heavy squad investment we made over the summer that saw over £400 million spent in the transfer window (it could have been higher had Marc Guehi's £35 million switch from Crystal Palace not fallen down at the eleventh hour) and it is almost unquestionable that the vast majority of our new arrivals have struggled to settle into life in England, at Liverpool and strike up solid understandings with their new playing colleagues.
Sadly for those fans who used sites like Bet 442 to predict that we would successfully defend our title, our odds have now crashed as they have obviously factored into our form. Slot made massive changes over the summer with an eye to the future, and our goalscoring threat has taken a hit, as has our defensive solidarity. However, the Christmas and New Year period was good to us and the current form guide has us unbeaten in the last nine and particularly given the creditable draw with Arsenal, we are back in fourth spot in the table with a small buffer on those below us, and we are rightly looking higher once again.
Consistency, a foundation in our performance levels has returned and we are reaping the rewards safe in the knowledge that there are still big improvements that can be made in our play, and without doubt we are still to see the best from some of the players in the group.
With recent improvements, plenty of the Anfield faithful are now looking towards the January transfer window being open and wondering what kind of business we might do before the end of the month. Naturally, there is a good expectation that we will see some of the fringe players move on as we look to help rebalance the books from our earlier spending and tighten up Slot's first team group to help bolster team spirit and understanding.
The biggest question given all the claims swirling on the speculation rumour mill right now is whether or not we will bring in any new faces, and more specifically will we return for 25 year old, 26 capped England international centre half, Guehi?
He is again a hot property this month and his stock, and reputation, has only been strengthen by his attitude to the failed transfer and the way he has knuckled down and continued to perform well and be a key player for Oliver Glasner this season. Predictably some would say, Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City have been linked with a potential swoop this month to varying degrees, and Palace are now on record confirming that he is available again this window if a suitable offer arrives at their door.
It was originally believed that we would return in the summer when he was a free agent, but following on quickly from Guardiola's capture of Bournemouth talent Antoine Semenyo, it is being suggested in some quarters that they are closing in on a £30 million capture of the calm defensive star. The City link is obvious following injuries to both stalwarts Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias, but our interest in him also speaks for itself when you look at our defensive record so far this campaign.
We will simply have to see if we continue to have an interest in Guehi or not, as presumably the funds remains free following our earlier attempt.
