"I don't feel there is enough contact" - Ian Wright on the penalty against Liverpool

Pundit Ian Wright has given his opinion on the penalty that Arsenal were awarded against Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium last Sunday.

During the second half of the Premier League clash, Gunners forward Gabriel Jesus went down in the penalty area after he felt slight contact from Reds midfielder Thiago Alcantara.

The penalty was awarded and Bukayo Saka converted, but Wright felt Liverpool were hard done by.

As quoted by Anfield Watch on Twitter, he told the Liverpool Echo the following: "When I see that, and as much as I am delighted my team has gone top of the league, I've got to look at that and say I can't see where the foul is.

"I don't feel there is enough contact for him to go down like he has. He has not swung out at him and caught him on the move, he is behind him and it is minimum contact.

"At some stage, surely the referees have got to see that and say 'No, he has not impeded'. They have got to look at these because, for me, I don't see the foul if I'm being totally honest.

"Is that enough of a touch? He is not falling over there (after the initial contact), is that enough to give a penalty?"

Anfield Watch Verdict

We completely agree with Wright's take. Thiago hardly touched Jesus. What made it worse was the penalty handed Arsenal the victory (3-2).

But, we will just have to move on. What has happened has happened. There is nothing we can do about it.

The reality is, Liverpool didn't play well enough to secure the three points against Arsenal. The Reds got what they deserved at the end of the day.

Hopefully Liverpool pick themselves up and go again. The best teams in the world always respond to adversity in a positive manner.
