Liverpool's dream transfer to replace Ibrahima Konate is now on.

It's looking very likely that Richard Hughes is going to be a busy man come the summer window. Liverpool have opted to keep their powder dry in January and will be looking to address their problems in the summer instead.

And there will be plenty of work for the club's sporting director to do.

Most importantly, he's going to have to rebuild the entire Liverpool backline.

Ibrahima Konate looks destined to leave. Virgil van Dijk is not getting any older. Joe Gomez could likely leave as well and he's not exactly a reliable option given his injury record.

Not to mention Andy Robertson could also leave on a free and the right-back situation is still up for debate given the volume of injuries Conor Bradley has suffered over the last few seasons.

Amidst all of these issues it's a surprise Liverpool have not acted and at least secured some signings ahead of the summer window.

It looks like Hughes is waiting until the end of the season to make key recruitment decisions and that could have easily backfired.

The club's primary target, Marc Guehi has already moved onto Manchester City. And another was set to join Chelsea.

Jeremy Jacquet is a target for the Blues in their efforts to bring in another centre-back to provide depth for Liam Rosenior.

However, while it looked like the Frenchman may have been open to the move, Rennes are seemingly standing in his way.

According to Ouest-France, Rennes are not planning to sell Jacquet in the January transfer window and will look to retain him until the end of the season.

The report also claims that no agreement has been reached between Chelsea and Jacquet over a contract so the situation is stalling at the moment.

Jacquet would be a dream option to replace Konate at Liverpool. He is a very similar player to his fellow compatriot, only more composed and even better on the ball in terms of his ability to make long diagonal and vertical switches from the back.

At 20-years-old, he could very much be the future of the club's defensive backline and someone who could take on the throne to become a leader in defence from Van Dijk.

Missing out on him in January would have been a real shame.

However, based on that recent report, it looks like the club's dream move to sign Jacquet is very much on.

Bring on the summer, and let's hope Hughes can get it over the line and beat Chelsea for his signature.
