Forgotten Liverpool star inches closer to permanent starting role

One Liverpool star is inching closer to a starting role. That's despite being largely forgotten.

There are some big changes at Liverpool on the way. Several of those will naturally happen this summer, especially with contracts expiring.

Ibrahima Konate is set to leave the club as things stand. Liverpool don’t appear to be particularly close to renewing his deal, even if doing so feels like the best option for everyone right now.

Andy Robertson, too, looks almost certainly to depart. He nearly joined Tottenham Hotspur last month and only Liverpool’s squad depth prevented him from leaving early.

But again, his contract will expire. It would be a real shock if he got a new one.

Federico Chiesa is another that looks likely to leave. Then both Joe Gomez and Curtis Jones will have interest in them after receiving offers this season.

And then there’s Alisson Becker.

Alisson Becker's complicated future

Alisson's contract technically expires this summer, too. Liverpool, however, hold a clause that allows them to extend it by one extra year.

It would be shocking if they didn't enact that clause. Even if Alisson were to leave, it would make sense to extend his deal and get a fee. And it sounds as though that might be an option.

Gazetta Dello Sport report that Juventus want Alisson. They feel there's a chance they get him, too, especially as Giorgi Mamardashvili is at Anfield.

The Georgian was signed to put pressure on Alisson, but he's instead been largely forgotten this season. He gets the cup games but none of the major fixtures unless the Brazilian is out.

But this report highlights that he's getting close to that starting role. It might come this summer, should Alisson leave but otherwise the chances feel very high that he gets it in a year's time.

Liverpool may even fancy bleeding him into the lineup more often in 2026/27, if Alisson is still around. Mamardashvili is, after all, the goalkeeper of the future at Anfield.

That's abundantly clear given they paid nearly £30m to get him. It makes no sense whatsoever to spend that much on your no.2 goalkeeper, nor do we believe Mamardashvili would have signed for Liverpool without some sort of assurances that he'd get the gig post-Alisson.

And that moment is getting closer. Be it in 2026 or 2027, we've got to believe Mamardashvili will be between the sticks before long.

It’ll be interesting to see if Giorgi Mamardashvili finally secures a starting spot at Liverpool FC, because with the uncertainty around Alisson Becker under Arne Slot, it feels like a new chapter is coming - kind of like leveling up to the next stage in Smash Karts Game.
