Forget Luis Diaz, latest Liverpool update confirms Richard Hughes’ BIGGEST mistake

Liverpool's problems seem to be going from bad to worse this season.

Not only are they fourth in the Premier League table but the fact that they're 14 points adrift of Arsenal is massively concerning.

A lot of this is down to the poor form that the Reds' first-team squad have been in this term, and, although there has been the odd game here and there when Liverpool's quality has shone through, more often than not they've been off the pace.

This lack of form, coupled with the sheer number of injuries Arne Slot's men have suffered means that they're often taking one step forward and two steps back.

Many mistakes have been made across the board at Anfield this term but Richard Hughes' mistake in summer could end up being the worst of all.

Richard Hughes should not have sanctioned the exit of Jarell Quansah in the summer

The 2025-26 summer transfer window was seen as one of the best in Liverpool's history.

The club spent over £450 million on new players with several areas of their squad getting upgraded.

Players such as Alexander Isak were added to their ranks but, since this massive amount of money was spent, funds needed to be raised in order for these moves to abide by the Premier League's PSR rules.

This resulted in several key members of Liverpool's team being moved on.

Jarell Quansah and Luis Diaz are two of the biggest names to have exited in summer and although most fans believe Diaz's sale was unnecessary, it's now becoming apparent how much Quansah was needed.

The defender could be used as a centre-back or a right-back if needed and since the Reds' defensive injuries seem to be never ending, another defender would've massively benefitted the squad.

Of course, nobody expected Giovanni Leoni to tear his ACL but even if he didn't get injured, four centre-backs still isn't enough cover for an entire season.

And, now that Conor Bradley has been ruled out for the rest of the campaign, questions are being asked about who's capable of plugging the gap.

Jarell Quansah would've filled in for Conor Bradley with ease

Liverpool may have Joe Gomez, Dominik Szoboszlai and Jeremie Frimpong who can all play at right-back but none of them are natural options for that position.

All three have put in decent performances as Liverpool's full-back this season, but, since Bradley's injury is going to be a long-term one, it's unclear whether the aforementioned trio will be able to keep up those performances for the rest of the campaign.

This is why Quansah should have been kept around.

It's clear that the Reds feel like he has a bright future ahead of him as they included a buy-back clause in his transfer to Bayer Leverkusen.

However, due to the arrival of Leoni, Frimpong and even Milos Kerkez he was moved on without the club having a succession plan in place.

This could end up being the Anfield outfit's biggest downfall and could potentially be Hughes' biggest mistake during his Liverpool reign.
