Florian Wirtz MYTH has been fully exposed
The myth around Florian Wirtz has been fully exposed at Liverpool. There’s no running from it.
Liverpool paid a lot of money to sign Florian Wirtz in the summer. In fact, they initially broke their transfer record to do it - even if the deal for Alexander Isak then broke it again.
But the Reds went all-out to sign one of the best players in world football. One who was still only 22.
There was an incredible amount of hype around Wirtz as a result, with Liverpool signing a player of such a calibre that they'd never really managed before. Ever. He was expected to take the league by storm.
Well, that hasn't happened. Wirtz has now played eight fixtures in the Premier League and two more in the UEFA Champions League, with zero goals and zero assists to show for it.
That has everyone convinced that he's not playing well. Including Arne Slot, it seems, as the Dutchman has dropped Wirtz for Liverpool's last two Premier League fixtures.
Only, it's not true. No one can deny that now.
The Florian Wirtz experiment
So Liverpool went without Wirtz in the starting XI against both Chelsea and Manchester United. Did it work?
Absolutely not. The Reds were actually losing by the time Wirtz entered the fray in both fixtures and hadn't scored. He is not the problem in any way, shape or form.
Instead, Liverpool looked a lot better once he was on the pitch and linking the attack. His movement off the ball and his ability to operate in tight spaces is actually the best way for the Reds to move up the pitch.
It could not have been any more clear that Liverpool were better once Wirtz came on today. It was night and day.
Against United, it was his control in the box that found Federico Chiesa to assist Cody Gakpo for the goal. Against Chelsea, he was brutally unfortunate not to register an all-time assist with one of his flicks.
Liverpool are more creative with Wirtz and they're more effective at moving the ball between the lines. The real problem is that they have no real idea how to consistently get him the ball in dangerous areas.
But that's a team-wide problem right now and still firmly exists when Wirtz is on the bench. Alexander Isak, for instance, had only 19 touches against United before going off.
The idea that Wirtz is a problem or not the right fit is an absolute myth. He's a world-class player being held back by a team that simply doesn't work.
If anything, the Reds should lean into him more as they try to find a way out of this mess.
