It still feels surreal to type but Florian Wirtz is edging closer to a move to Liverpool.

The Reds are confident they can strike an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen, according to Florian Plettenberg, after the German international made it clear he had chosen his next destination as Anfield.

Wirtz is a really exciting player. He's someone who will give Arne Slot's side an entirely new dimension in attack.

At 22-years-old the sky is the limit for him. He can literally go as far in the game as possible and become one of the best players of this generation of footballers.

This is why it's so exciting that Liverpool have been able to land his services. It's not often that the Reds have been involved in a deal like this or have signed one of the best young prospects in world football.

Perhaps not since Fernando Torres have Liverpool landed a talent as exciting as Wirtz.

He gives Slot a lot of tactical flexibility because he can play in a number of positions. At this stage, it's not clear what Liverpool's plans are for him.

However, there is an option that might allow Wirtz to follow in the footsteps of one of his idols.

Speaking to the Bundesliga, Wirtz revealed that Ousmane Dembele was one of his idols growing up. Which is a bit of a surprise considering he's only a few years older than the German.

"He [Dembele] was one of my idols when I was younger, I directly followed him back [when he followed him on Instagram]."

Wirtz also added in the same interview that the best shirt he ever swapped with a player was one from Dembele.

So the admiration is there for the current Paris Saint Germain star and the admiration is also there from Slot towards the French side.

Slot has been hugely appreciative of PSG's style, with the dynamism and flexibility they have in attack, as well as the full-backs bombing forward.

One of the key players in that side is Dembele, who has been playing as a false nine and has found the form of his life this season.

After PSG brought in Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Dembele was shifted further up the pitch and has become incredibly prolific.

Wirtz's ability to play multiple positions across the attack gives Slot the option to use him in a similar role to Dembele.

If Liverpool can bring him in, he could very much become Slot's very own Dembele, functioning as a false nine and perhaps even negating the needs for the Reds to sign a true no.9.

It might seem like a crazy concept, but it's not really. Paris Saint Germain have cruised to the Ligue 1 title this season and are on the brink of winning the Champions League, having reached the final and being firm favourites against Inter Milan.

Modern football has evolved to become more than just traditional no.9 forward players. Wirtz still brings you goals and creativity, he's been involved in 31 goal contributions this season.

He'll also make the likes of Salah, Diaz, Szoboszlai and Gakpo alongside him even better.
