'Feelings are positive': Fabrizio Romano gives state of play for Xabi Alonso to Liverpool
Fabrizio Romano has shared his latest on Xabi Alonso potentially taking over at Liverpool.
Fabrizio Romano suggests Liverpool do hold some sort of interest in appointing Xabi Alonso as their new head coach. However, it’s less clear whether they’ll actually make a move.
Romano was talking on his YouTube channel and feels the Reds are still yet to make an ultimate decision over their head coach role. Arne Slot has struggled to get the team performing consistently this season, sparking an awful lot of calls for change.
Alonso is a natural successor, given his links to Liverpool and outstanding efforts with Bayer Leverkusen. Not to mention the natural link to Florian Wirtz, the player signed to be the face of this team going forward.
“Is true or is not true that Xabi Alonso has agreed already a three-year contract with Liverpool?” asked Romano.
“At the moment, there is nothing done agreed in talks advanced between Xabi Alonso and Liverpool. I can guarantee that nothing has been decided.
“At the end of the season, Liverpool will have an internal review involving players, managers, and all people at the club.
“So there is going to be an internal conversation to review the season, but at the moment nothing is decided, nothing is agreed with Xabi Alonso. There is an appreciation, of course, former Liverpool player, top coach. So for sure, between Xabi Alonso and Liverpool, the feelings are positive, but nothing at all has been agreed as of today.”
Xabi Alonso: Situation Summary
Champions League Setback
The Reds suffered a sense of "déjà vu" at RAMS Park, losing by the same scoreline as their September visit. Former Wolves midfielder Mario Lemina scored the decisive header in the seventh minute. Despite creating numerous chances—including misses from Florian Wirtz and Alexis Mac Allister—and having an Ibrahima Konate goal disallowed for handball, Liverpool failed to find an equalizer. Slot took responsibility for the loss but expressed confidence that the tie can be overturned at Anfield next week.
Future and Xabi Alonso Rumours
Speculation regarding Slot's future has intensified following the defeat. While he led Liverpool to the Premier League title last season, the club currently sits sixth domestically. Reports of a "verbal agreement" with Xabi Alonso have surfaced, suggesting the former Real Madrid manager could take over in June 2026. While insiders like Fabrizio Romano state nothing is official, they acknowledge a formal review of Slot's position will occur this summer, with Champions League qualification seen as vital for his job security.
