The centre of Liverpool’s defence should be one of the club’s top priorities over the next 12 months.

Ibrahima Konate’s contract expires at the end of the season and, as it stands, the Frenchman will be leaving for free in the summer.

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, Liverpool’s only other two fit senior centre backs, both have contracts that expire at the end of next season too.

Giovanni Lenoi, who signed for the Reds in the summer, sustained a devastating injury on his debut for the club and is yet to prove himself.

Everything suggests that Liverpool’s next signing should be a central defender, but progress in the hunt for the Reds’ next defender seems to be stalling.

Liverpool set to miss out on another top target

Marc Guehi was moments away from becoming a Red in the summer, but Crystal Palace pulled the plug on the deal at the last minute and now it looks as though Guehi is destined for Manchester City.

Missing out on the England international is a big loss for the Anfield faithful, but the Reds are close to missing out on another of their top targets.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have agreed personal terms with Rennes’ defender Jeremy Jacquet, and a deal between club’s is currently being finalised.

Jacquet is one of the most highly rated young defenders in Europe, and a player who Liverpool have been linked with this winter.

Who else could Liverpool sign?

There are several central defenders that have been linked with Merseyside moves, but their availability along with the Reds desire to bring in reinforcements in January has been questioned.

Alessandro Bastoni is one of the most exciting names linked with an Anfield switch, but the Italian likely won’t be available until the summer.

Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck has also been touted as a potential target, but as the January window ticks closer to closing it seems less and less likely that a new defender will be signed.

If no defensive reinforcements arrive at Anfield this winter, a central defender must be the number one priority going into the summer, and Liverpool cannot continue to miss out on their top targets.
