Fabrizio Romano confirms Liverpool target ready to complete move
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that a Liverpool target is ready to make a move in 2026.
Richard Hughes may have brought in a lot of players over the course of last summer's window but he also sold a lot as well.
This means that the club's mission to strengthen the team and build a dynasty is far from over. It has only just begun and the next three or four windows are going to determine just how successful this team can become.
As early as the January window Liverpool are expected to be investing in the squad. They need more reinforcements and they need players who can provide depth in areas where Slot is missing quality alternatives.
Among the names most frequently mentioned with Liverpool are Marc Guehi and Antoine Semenyo.
But there's another player who could end up on the club's radar, who is reportedly ready to make a move next year and who has been linked with a move to Anfield.
Fabrizio Romano has taken to Twitter to share exciting news about Jean-Philippe Mateta's future at Crystal Palace. The French international is on Liverpool's radar and there was a report linking him to the club as recently as last week.
Now, according to Romano, several clubs are monitoring his situation from the Premier League and Serie A. The Italian transfer expert claims that Mateta has not been in talks with Crystal Palace over a new deal since last summer.
So it seems like the Frenchman is ready to make a move.
On paper it would be surprising for Liverpool to make a move for Mateta given they just signed Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak.
However, we are already seeing the former struggling with fitness issues and perhaps adding more firepower to the attack is not such a bad idea.
Especially a player of Mateta's calibre. This is one of the best forwards in the Premier League. Mateta is a clinical finisher and he simply thrives inside the box due to his physical attributes and intelligent movement and anticipation.
Considering Liverpool are struggling to break down opposition teams who sit deep, having an outlet to aim at inside the box with more direct play like crosses and set-pieces could give Slot a further option to tinker his style and unlock those resolute defences.
Mateta's profile fits that. The only question mark hanging over him is his age. He's going to be 29-years-old next year. Liverpool don't tend to sign players around that age or older.
But perhaps they may just look to bring him in anyway, given the need for more experience in the forward lines. Especially, if Mo Salah moves on.
