Fabrizio Romano confirms Liverpool in talks with African star
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Liverpool are in talks with an African star.
We have entered December and that means we are now officially just one month away from the January transfer window opening.
Now looking back to the summer we didn't think that the Reds would be in for a busy period in the winter. Richard Hughes made a lot of changes and spent a lot of money in the process.
However, what has transpired since on the pitch has highlighted that the club's rebuilding process is still very much ongoing.
Right now Arne Slot has a very imbalanced team and that has had an impact on Liverpool's results. In order to address that the best thing for Liverpool would be to enter the market.
There are certain profiles lacking in this Liverpool squad at the moment. Chiefly among them is a winger who can hold the width and be a more traditional wide player.
Right now there's only Rio Ngumoha in the squad who is that type of winger. The rest of Liverpool's attackers are far more comfortable coming inside and being inverted forwards.
There's been a lot of talk about Antoine Semenyo potentially being that player for Liverpool. He's certainly available in the upcoming window with there being a release clause in his contract that can be activated for Β£65m.
A figure so low for a player of his quality is a bargain in this day and age. Semenyo's one vs one ability and the way he can use both feet equally comfortably and therefore play on either wing makes him a really ideal addition for Liverpool.
He's the type of player who is missing in this squad. The type of play Hughes has wanted to bring to Anfield from day one when he made a move for Anthony Gordon as one of his first attempted transfers during the summer of 2024.
He then tried the same with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Again that move failed in January 2025.
Could it be third time lucky with Semenyo? Well, it remains to be seen. But Liverpool are certainly working on it.
Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed that the Reds have held talks with the African star to understand his situation. They are reportedly well informed.
However, so are Manchester City, who are also interested in him and are also ready to trigger his release clause.
So this is not going to be an easy race for Liverpool to win. It's one that they are going to have to fight for.
Ultimately under the current circumstances it's difficult to tell who may win the race for the Ghanian. Hughes has a good relationship with Semenyo, having signed him for Bournemouth.
But football is business and that means Semenyo may look at Manchester City's project as the better fit for him right now given Liverpool's poor form.
