Fabrizio Romano confirms Liverpool in talks to sign England star
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Liverpool are in talks with an England international ahead of a move in 2026.
It's the quiet period of the transfer window on the surface but behind the scenes this is a time that is just as busy for the club's executives.
It's during this time of the season when Liverpool identify players to target and also start to make their first approaches for those potential targets.
Last year, contact was established with Milos Kerkez in November. Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak's representatives were also contacted around the same time.
So, Liverpool are going to be making similar approaches around this time of the year, too.
Who those targets are is not necessarily a mystery.
The media have already heavily spoken about Antoine Semenyo, who seems to be a primary candidate for Liverpool. And there's a strong chance that the Reds will sign him during the January transfer window.
Away from Semenyo, Liverpool will also have other targets in their mind. They will want to sign a centre-back because of the injury that happened to Giovanni Leoni.
Obviously, the player who Liverpool have really wanted to sign for a long time now is Marc Guehi. The Reds were so close to getting his signature over the line in the summer window until Crystal Palace pulled the plug in the last minute.
However, not all hope is lost.
According to Fabrizio Romano Liverpool are still there and in talks with the player at the moment. The transfer expert confirmed this on his YouTube channel.
Although Romano also confirmed that other clubs are interested in Guehi as well, including Bayern Munich. So, at this moment in time Guehi has not closed the door on Liverpool but he's also exploring other options.
What Romano also communicated is that he expects Guehi to leave on a free transfer. At this moment in time it doesn't look like he's going to be moving in the January window.
So, Liverpool now face a nervous wait to see whether the England international will opt for the Reds, or whether he will decide to move elsewhere.
Certainly, he'd be a great signing. However, Liverpool will have alternative options, including someone like Nico Schlotterbeck. Nonetheless, the fact that they are still in talks to sign Guehi means they must not have given up on his signature just yet.
