Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Liverpool could make a surprise late move in the January window.

Time is running out for the Reds to get deals over the line. The January transfer window shuts in just a few days on Monday evening.

Normally, Liverpool don't leave things until the last minute. But there are times when that becomes necessary.

This might just be one of those occasions. Liverpool's defensive numbers are depleted to the bare bones with Jeremie Frimpong's injury, who is expected to be out for a few weeks.

It's Frimpong's third muscle injury since arriving at the club in the summer and it's compounded by a niggle to Joe Gomez as well as Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni being ruled out until the rest of the season.

Right now, Liverpool are having to rely on just Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, Ibrahima Konate and Milos Kerke to get by, with others like Wataru Endo and Dominik Szoboszlai filling in the gaps.

This is a precarious situation and it's a situation that has to be addressed in the market. If Liverpool harbour any hopes of having a successful season both in the Champions League and Premier League, they will need to have more depth than they currently possess.

Richard Hughes should have already acted when Marc Guehi became available earlier on in the window. But instead he was beaten by Manchester City for his signature.

With just days left in the window, finding the right target is going to be extremely difficult. Not many clubs will be open to selling their key player midway through the season, with very little time to replace them.

Liverpool only have themselves to blame and it feels like the club isn't going to be making any moves. However, Fabrizio Romano has hinted at the contrary.

Speaking on his YouTube channel the football guru confirmed that Liverpool are exploring a surprise late January deal.

"Liverpool today had some conversations internally to check the right backs market," Romano said.

"They are exploring some possibilities but they believe there are not so many options of quality. If they find a good solution, they will go for it. Otherwise, they will stay with the current squad."

So based on those words, a late transfer is a possibility. Although it remains unlikely given how late it is in the window but the fact is that Liverpool are at least making moves and trying to bring in someone before the deadline.

Should they have been having these conversations before? Maybe at the start of the transfer window? Absolutely.

But there's nothing we or they can do about that now. The only thing we can hope for is that they do find a good solution.
