Liverpool have set their sights on one of the fastest players in the world.

Left-wing is a position where Richard Hughes has been trying to strengthen the Reds ever since he took up his position as sporting director.

In his first summer, Liverpool made a move to sign Anthony Gordon. They followed that up with an approach for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the January window of last season.

In the summer window, Hughes had other priorities. However, he still explored moves for the likes of Antoine Semenyo, Malick Fofana and Bradley Barcola.

Ultimately, at the time the Reds decided to give Rio Ngumoha, after a brilliant pre-season, an opportunity to shine in the first-team.

However, signing a potential alternative or back-up to Cody Gakpo remains on the agenda.

Liverpool have a number of players on their shortlist, and Anfield Watch understands that one of those stars is Jean-Matteo Bahoya.

Liverpool scouts have been impressed by the incredibly fast Eintracht Frankfurt winger who caught the eye last season with his link-up play with Hugo Ekitike.

This season he has started the season in promising form, too. He's made four goal contributions in just over 500 minutes of football and registered three assists in one game for France's U21 side during a European Championship qualifier.

Only 20-years-old, Frankfurt signed Bahoya from Ligue 2 side Angers. He's since integrated very well into the Bundesliga and has become one of the club's leading stars in the absence of Ekitike and Omar Marmoush.

An excellent dribbler, Bahoya's biggest asset is his speed. The winger clocked a remarkable 37.16 km/h in a match against Bochum last season, which meant he was the first player to break the 37 km/h mark in the Bundesliga.

For comparison, the world's fastest man Usain Bolt had an average speed of about 37.58 km/h (23.35 mph) during his 9.58-second 100m world record.

Bahoya's record makes him the fastest player in Europe at the moment.

Speed is something Liverpool are looking to add to Arne Slot's attack and in this sense Bahoya fits the profile of what the club's scouts are looking for.

Still very young, the club's recruitment department believe Bahoya not only has the ability to make an impact in the side now but he also has the potential to become a replacement for Gakpo in the coming years.

The fact that he already has an existing relationship with Ekitike is a bonus. As is the fact that Liverpool have a strong relationship with Franfurt following successful negotiations over the club's acquisition of their no.22.

However, at the moment, the German side are very much focused on tying Bahoya down to a new contract. The club's priority is to extend his current deal with better terms to reflect his role as a starter in the team.

Liverpool are keeping a close eye on the situation. It is believed that if Bahoya does not agree to the new terms, the Reds could potentially sign him for a bargain price.
