Excitement at Liverpool about future world-class front three
There's reportedly excitement at Liverpool about their future front-three. It's one we'll be seeing a lot of.
Liverpool spent over £400m in the summer and the majority of that went on reshaping their attack. First, they broke their transfer record to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen.
The playmaker became their first-ever nine-figure signing in the process. He was followed by Hugo Ekitike, who signed from Eintracht Frankfurt for around £80m.
But that wasn’t all. Liverpool then went out and broke the British transfer record with a deal for Alexander Isak with Newcastle United. It was an incredible amount of money but the Reds figured they were signing a world-class player.
We haven’t actually seen the best of them, however. Liverpool brought in the trio but fitness issues with Isak, followed by a leg break, have kept him sidelined for the majority of the campaign.
Thus the plan hasn’t really been seen. Liverpool bought the trio to be the future of their attack but seven months in, we’ve barely seen them together.
That will soon change. Isak is back training and should return to the pitch this month. In doing so, Liverpool will have their plan back on track.
The Liverpool Echo reports that there’s excitement about the Isak - Wirtz - Ekitike front three, even if it’s not entirely clear how that shapes up in Arne Slot’s 4-2-3-1 system. But that trio is the plan in attack and the one Liverpool are working towards.
And there’s no question that getting it right would give the Reds a truly world-class attack. It’s just about fitting the three of them together in a way that suits the rest of the team.
Slot doesn’t exactly have a lot of time to figure that out, given the ‘business end’ of the season is upon us. Get it right, though, and Liverpool may still compete for honours over the next two months.
Few, after all, can boast an attack with players that good.
Florian Wirtz: Situation Summary
Premier League Performance and Role
Florian Wirtz has enjoyed a productive debut season at Liverpool following his British-record £116 million move from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2025. As of April 1, 2026, the 22-year-old playmaker has recorded six goals and five assists across 34 appearances in all competitions. While he has predominantly featured on the left wing under Arne Slot, recent reports suggest a tactical shift to a 4-2-2-2 formation designed to move Wirtz into his preferred central attacking midfield role. His creative output remains elite, ranking in the 95th percentile for chances created, and he has been a consistent starter when available.
Injury Status and Transfer Talk
Wirtz is currently working his way back to full fitness after a lingering back injury sidelined him for several matches in late February and early March 2026. After missing a string of games, including a league clash with Wolves, he returned to action as a substitute in late March and notably starred for Germany during the international break, scoring twice against Switzerland. Off the pitch, his agent recently sparked controversy by revealing he had attempted to engineer a move to Real Madrid before Wirtz chose Anfield. While Bayern Munich and Manchester City remain admirers, Wirtz is under contract until 2030 and is considered a cornerstone of Liverpool’s long-term project.
