€100m could be all it takes to save Liverpool’s season

Liverpool faced a lot of problems during the 2025-26 season.

Injuries were the main issue that they faced but, thanks to all of the changes that Arne Slot and Richard Hughes made to the Reds' first-team squad, none of the players knew how to play with one another.

Of course, this wasn't helped by the fact that they didn't sign Alexander Isak until deadline day but, even then, you'd have expected Liverpool to do a lot better than they did.

However, even as the season went on, things didn't get any better which is when the cracks really started to show.

And now, with Andoni Iraola at the helm, even more change is expected but, at least he now knows which areas of his team really need upgrading.

Change is going to happen to every team in every season that is played out but, right now, it feels like one deal could genuinely save Iraola's first campaign in charge.

Crystal Palace want €100m for Adam Wharton

Last season, Ryan Gravenberch failed to meet expectations.

During the 2024-25 campaign, the Dutchman was seen as one of the Premier League's best defensive midfielders with only Rodri appearing ahead of him on most people's lists.

However, something just didn't click during Arne Slot's last campaign in charge which led to fans questioning why he'd even been offered a new contract in the first place.

These questions also led to fans demanding that a new defensive midfielder was signed but, in the end, that never came to fruition.

However, now that a new era is underway at Anfield, change is expected once again with the latest news from Ekrem Konur sharing how much it would cost for Liverpool to sign one of their long-term targets.

"Manchester United are back in the race for Adam Wharton," he wrote.

"Scouts see him as a left‑footed controller who carries the ball and dictates tempo.

"Rivals: Chelsea & Real Madrid.

"Crystal Palace value him at €100M, while United’s £70M readiness slows talks."

Signing Adam Wharton could save Liverpool's season

Of all the areas in their squad, Liverpool's midfield is arguably their most stacked.

Iraola will be using a 4-2-3-1 formation which means that he only needs two defensive midfielders and one attacking midfielder.

However, among their ranks at the moment, they have around 8 different options for those positions.

Indeed, some such as Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones are still being linked with moves away but, if they all end up staying put, Iraola will have a lot of players to choose from.

But, since Liverpool don't have enough homegrown players among their ranks, Wharton would be the perfect signing.

The Englishman has plenty of Premier League experience and, even though he's naturally a number six, his passing ability is second-to-none.

At the moment, it's unclear how Liverpool will end up doing this season but, if they don't get a few more deals over the line soon, they could actually end up worse off than they were last term.

Indeed, Ronald Araujo has been added which will help solve their defensive issues but, in reality, Wharton would be the important addition.
