DRAMATIC change available to Liverpool as Arne Slot struggles

Arne Slot is struggling to get Liverpool playing properly. A dramatic change is available, though, and it's one that should probably happen.

Liverpool are not functioning as a proper team right now. The Reds have lost five of their last six matches, including their last four in the Premier League.

Only the 5-1 win in Frankfurt showed real hope that things were heading in the correct direction. Even then, Eintracht Frankfurt were absolutely horrendous defensively in that game - and still took the lead.

It just seems incredibly clear that this group of players do not fit the style of play. Liverpool have largely tried to replicate what worked last season, with relatively minor changes to the formula.

That's not working in any area of the pitch, though. The Reds are conceding goals at an alarming rate while also struggling to control games with the ball. Though, those two things are quite linked.

What we haven't seen is a major change to the system. Arne Slot has moved players around but always roughly in the same system and positions.

This week, however, opens the door for a dramatic change.

Liverpool vs Crystal Palace

Liverpool will host Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening as they take a break from the more ‘major’ competitions. Now, that will mean that Slot takes this one a lot less seriously than the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

In fact, it means there will be a part of the club that really doesn’t mind if they exit this competition. The extra rest and preparation time that comes with losing would boost them in other competitions.

But whatever team goes out there will try to win - there’s no question about that. And that does provide an opportunity to have the cake and eat it.

Liverpool will rotate and use some of their less regular players. Wataru Endo and Federico Chiesa almost certainly get the nod from the start, for instance, along with Joe Gomez.

The heavy rotation will mean lots of swapping about and we’d argue that it shouldn’t be in the regular 4-2-3-1 system. Take this opportunity to swap into a different shape for the first real time under Slot and see if it can stifle teams.

It’s a chance to see if someone like Chiesa can offer more threat in a different system. Or if having Endo as a proper holding midfielder in a different shape can protect the back four from what teams are currently throwing at Liverpool.

There’s a chance for dramatic changes here and we think Slot should make them. Really shake it up, give everyone something brand new, and learn some important lessons to take into the Aston Villa clash this weekend.
