Dominik Szoboszlai makes amazing STATEMENT as Liverpool suffer defeat
Liverpool fell to a fourth consecutive defeat against Brentford on Saturday. Dominik Szoboszlai, however, made a statement.
Liverpool were awful as they lost at Brentford. The Reds were searching for an end to their run of three consecutive defeats. Instead, that run is now four.
Things started badly for the team as the Bees got an early goal and they never really corrected themselves. This was a fixture in which Liverpool were never in control.
That's a massively worrying sign, of course. The Reds were supposed to improve after their defeats, treating it as the blip it is.
But now it doesn't look like a blip. Liverpool have been regressing over this period of poor form and the Brentford defeat was the worst yet.
That isn't to say that it's all bad. There was a massive positive from the defeat: Dominik Szoboszlai with a statement performance.
Dominik Szoboszlai steps up
Szoboszlai started in midfield here, much as he did against Eintracht Frankfurt in midweek. He again partnered Curtis Jones as a sitting two - and again they kept the ball fantastically well.
Szoboszlai played the most accurate passes in the match with 78 and Jones wasn't far behind on 73. They were two of three Reds who completed double-digit passes into the final third along with Virgil van Dijk.
The Hungarian had the joint-most chances created for Liverpool, too, with a pair. Cody Gakpo matched that.
And Liverpool's no.8 also completed a magnificent eight long balls in the match. This was twice as many as any other outfield player and, incredibly, came from just 10 attempts.
But above all, there were the defensive contributions. Szoboszlai had 22 of these - comfortably the most in the match. Van Dijk was second on 16, with three Brentford players then filling the gap to Liverpool's next player, Jones, on 11.
This was Szoboszlai highlighting what he is right now, then - Liverpool's best and most versatile midfielder. In fact, he might just be the best well-rounded player at the club.
His goal against Frankfurt was followed by an assist for Mo Salah's goal here. Szoboszlai is currently doing it all and he must be the starting point for the midfield right now - especially if Jones is out.
He's making things happen at both ends of the pitch, demonstrating everything Liverpool hoped for when they signed him from RB Leipzig. An undoubted high point from the last few games and it sends a statement: no more right-back.
Szoboszlai is a must in the middle and making things tick. Saturday showed that perfectly and as Liverpool try to get back on track, they've simply got to take advantage of those few stars playing well.
