Clever Liverpool trick could see star sold despite agreement
Liverpool could still sell one star despite an agreement. It's a clever trick but is it the right one?
Alisson Becker will remain at Liverpool beyond the end of the season. That was confirmed as the Reds triggered a clause in his contract that extends it by one year.
The Brazilian's deal was going to end in June but now it'll stretch through June 2027. It's the right move as letting the team's first-choice goalkeeper needlessly leave for nothing would have been insane.
But that's the thing here - the extension means Alisson won't leave for free. It doesn't mean he won't leave.
Liverpool could merely be making sure they get a fee for Alisson, much in the same way they offered Curtis Jones a new contract ahead of a potential move to Inter back in January. It's a real possibility, especially with Juventus reportedly sniffing around.
And especially as it's difficult to believe that Giorgi Mamardashvili is going to spend another season on the bench. He was signed to be Liverpool's no.1 and while he'll have known he had to wait for the position, two years as a backup seems like too much.
We don't think both will be in the squad next season. And it may well be because Liverpool move on from Alisson - but with a fee.
Alisson Becker: Situation Summary
Contract Extension to 2027
On 14 March, Liverpool officially triggered a one-year extension option in Alisson’s contract, securing his stay at Anfield until June 2027. This strategic move aims to end uncertainty regarding his future, as he was previously set to enter the final year of his deal this summer. The extension aligns his departure date with other senior leaders like Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.
Transfer Interest from Italy
Despite the extension, Italian giants Juventus and Inter Milan continue to monitor the 33-year-old. Juventus manager Luciano Spalletti, who worked with Alisson at Roma, reportedly views him as a "transformative" signing for his project in Turin. Reports suggest Juventus would be willing to match his €6 million annual salary to bring him back to Serie A.
Fitness and Availability
Alisson is currently managing a "minor" muscle strain sustained in training last week, which sidelined him for the recent trip to Istanbul. While the issue is not considered serious, he is undergoing a rehabilitation program to ensure he is fit for the Champions League second leg against Galatasaray this Wednesday.
