Bombshell update on Liverpool contract talks sets up summer sale
A bombshell update on Liverpool contract talks has set up a summer sale they don't necessarily want to make.
Liverpool confirmed a new contract for Ryan Gravenberch on Saturday. The midfielder has tied his long-term future to the Reds and will earn himself a sizeable wage as one of the best-paid players at the club.
It's phase one of the midfield rebuild. That phase will continue with more contract offers as Dominik Szoboszlai are both being chased for new deals.
That's according to the likes of The Times, who says offers are in the mix for the pair. It's long been reported that Szoboszlai was in similar talks to Gravenberch and so we expect him to re-sign next.
As for Mac Allister, it sounds as though that one might be quite complicated.
Alexis Mac Allister: Situation Summary
Recent Injury and Fitness Update
Mac Allister provided a significant scare during Liverpool’s 3-1 FA Cup victory over Wolves on 6 March. The 27-year-old was forced off in the 82nd minute after jarring his knee during a heavy challenge from Hwang Hee-chan. However, head coach Arne Slot provided a reassuring update following the match, stating he believed the midfielder would be "fine." While Mac Allister was seen limping slightly after the game, he was able to take his place on the bench rather than heading straight to the dressing room. He is currently expected to be available for the crucial Champions League round-of-16 first leg against Galatasaray on 10 March, though his fitness will be monitored closely in the 48 hours leading up to the trip to Istanbul.
Performance and Tactical Consistency
Despite what some analysts have described as a "turbulent" season for Liverpool, Mac Allister has remained a fixture in Arne Slot’s starting XI, making 41 appearances across all competitions. He has found a prolific run of form recently, scoring in consecutive matches against Nottingham Forest and West Ham United in late February. Across the 2025/26 campaign, he has contributed five goals and four assists, often operating in a double pivot alongside Gravenberch. His ability to dictate the tempo has been vital, particularly as the team manages the absence of long-term casualties like Wataru Endo and Florian Wirtz.
Transfer Speculation and Real Madrid
The lack of an immediate contract extension has fuelled ongoing reports linking Mac Allister with a move to Real Madrid. Spanish outlets have frequently suggested that he has moved to the top of Madrid's midfield wishlist for the summer of 2026, ahead of other high-profile targets. Furthermore, there have been surprising reports of interest from Manchester United, though Liverpool are understood to have no intention of selling to a domestic rival. While the player’s camp insists he is "happy and comfortable" at Anfield, the club is reportedly aware that a substantial offer from the Bernabéu could test their resolve if a new deal is not finalised by the end of the current season.
Mac Allister's Dad denies talks
Carlos Mac Allister has denied that his son, Alexis, has held contract talks with Liverpool. It contradicts reports suggesting the Reds have held some sort of talks with their midfielder.
"There are no negotiations with Liverpool to renew the contract," he told WinWin.
Mac Allister has long been reported as the one of the trio least likely to renew. Interest from Real Madrid is apparently there - though, you can certainly say the same about Szoboszlai.
But it seems as though Liverpool are a bit behind when it comes to Mac Allister. It's a situation that sets up a potential summer sale, too, as the Argentine will be two years out from the end of his current deal.
That's the prime time to sell a player - as we saw with Luis Diaz in 2025.
