Arne Slot weakness EXPOSED and it's uncomfortable for Liverpool
Liverpool took a chance when they appointed Arne Slot. A weakness in his game that they did not know about is being exposed.
Liverpool needed a near-miracle when replacing Jurgen Klopp in 2024. How do you find someone who can replace one of the greatest managers on the planet?
Ultimately, they took a chance on Arne Slot. And it was a chance - Slot had never managed in one of the 'big five' European leagues and his success came largely with underdogs in the Netherlands.
As much as Feyenoord can be considered an underdog, anyway.
Now, it's safe to say they were right to take that chance. Slot won the Premier League title in his debut campaign and that does justify the decision to hire him no matter what happens afterwards.
But in terms of a long-term successor - is that what Slot truly is? This season has thrown up a weakness of his and it's one Liverpool simply wouldn't have known about.
Arne Slot's weakness
Liverpool have entered a rotten period of form this season. It's their worst run since the 1950s and they've struggled badly to get out of it.
Slot hasn't necessarily handled it well. Notably, he said he was 'confused' as to why it's happening, while we've seen Liverpool play out game after game with minimal changes to either the starting XI or the overall system.
Now, that has changed a little in recent games. Slot has gradually moved towards a 4-4-2 diamond, rather than his 4-2-3-1 - and it has brought a draw and a win.
But the lack of decisiveness we've seen maybe shouldn't be a surprise. As pointed out by the Athletic, Slot has essentially never dealt with a crisis like this.
His teams have always played well and any poor runs of form have been short. They haven't even been particularly bad before.
And so this is a weakness of his - Slot literally does not know the best way to get out of a situation like this. Klopp did, having suffered relegation with Mainz and enduring a very difficult final season with Borussia Dortmund, though one he did eventually turn around.
But Slot? This is all brand new and no one knows how well he can get things back on track. Now, this could be the making of him and perhaps the Dutchman takes lessons from all of this, figures things out, and is a better coach for it - that's the best-case scenario.
Until he's proven that, though, it's all just hope. And it isn't proving comfortable to endure.
