Arne Slot set to finally hand wonderkid his Premier League debut
A Liverpool youngster is finally going to be handed his big chance.
Arne Slot doesn't have it easy at the moment. His players are falling like dominoes with injuries. Against Brighton he was already without Wataru Endo, and had to use a number of academy kids on the bench.
Now matters are even worse. Dominik Szoboszlai picked up an injury and was forced off the pitch as was Joe Gomez leaving Liverpool with dwindling options.
Jeremie Frimpong may be back in contention come the game against Tottenham at the weekend. But Szoboszlai faces a nervous wait and Gomez is also unlikely to participate in that match.
Thankfully, Conor Bradley will be back from suspension, but if there's no Szoboszlai Slot is going to have to make an interesting choice.
Without Szoboszlai it will be interesting to see how he intends to use the diamond formation that has been so effective over the course of the last few games.
Apart from the Hungarian, he doesn't really have any other senior midfield options. Which means Slot may be forced to hand a Premier League debut to Trey Nyoni.
The Reds' wonderkid has played plenty of first-team games for the club. In total Nyoni has played eight matches and registered one assist. But none of these games have come in the Premier League.
He's played most of his minutes in the domestic cups and a handful of games in Europe.
Over the course of pre-season, Nyoni was a stand-out performer. Whether Slot asked him to play in midfield or even as a centre-back, he always delivered.
In actual competitive action, Nyoni's chances have been scarce. He's not really had that much game time and when he has played he was part of a completely rotated team.
It's hard to judge him in those League Cup games, especially the Crystal Palace one where Slot basically sent out an U21 side to face a very strong Premier League team.
But now we could actually see Nyoni showcase his quality. If Szoboszlai is unfit to face Spurs and Endo is still injured, Slot will have to hand an opportunity to the teenager.
He just doesn't have any other midfielder to play in that role so Nyoni will have to play.
It'll be a big test, and one that Nyoni absolutely deserves. His Premier League debut has been a long time coming.
