Arne Slot regret over sale of three Liverpool players
Liverpool’s drop off in form was one of the last things that football fans expected this season.
The Anfield outfit were one of the most dominant teams in the Premier League last term with their Champions League run only coming to an end due to the quality among Paris Saint-Germain’s ranks.
Most fans were left buzzing about Liverpool’s future and what they had in store but, in reality, things just haven’t been the same.
Last season, their playstyle was unpredictable with Mohamed Salah putting in his best-ever season also having a major part to play in the way things panned out.
However, since the Egyptian King has failed to reach those same standards and others such as Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate have been nowhere near their best, it’s likely for Arne Slot to have some regret about selling some players in the summer transfer window.
Jarrell Quansah
One of Slot’s biggest regrets this season is likely to be the sale of Jarell Quansah.
The Englishman can be used at centre-back or right-back if needed and this versatility would have been massively beneficial to Liverpool this season.
Indeed, the fact that the defender wanted regular playtime will have had a massive impact on the way things panned out but looking at how things have gone, Quansah would have been a massive help.
The centre-back knows exactly how Liverpool play and even though he did have a mistake in him from time to time, he’d have certainly performed better than the likes of Konate.
Indeed, Giovanni Leoni’s ACL tear is something that Slot couldn’t have planned for but going into the campaign with just four senior centre-backs was a massive mistake.
Liverpool do have a buy-back clause in Quansah’s deal if they wish to activate it in the future but, realistically, they should have just kept him on and allowed him to prove his worth.
Luis Diaz
Luis Diaz is perhaps the most obvious option of the three players named on this list.
The 2024-25 season was the best of the Colombian’s career with the former Porto man really coming into his own at Anfield last term.
However, since he was entering the final two years of his deal and Liverpool didn’t want to give him any extra money to extend his stay, a £60 million + deal was agreed with Bayern Munich.
At the time, fans were ecstatic to have received that much money for the attacker but now, it feels like they wish he still played for them.
Diaz has managed to get off to an incredible start with Bayern and without him, they’d have been nowhere near as dominant as they are this season.
If Slot and Richard Hughes had kept him around for just a little longer, things would likely be going much better for Liverpool with the Colombian likely to have kept Cody Gakpo out of the team.
Indeed, the Dutchman has produced the odd moment of class here and there but more often than not, fans have wished for Diaz to be the one on the left-wing, especially with the recent form he’s shown.
Harvey Elliott
Perhaps the most out there shouts of the three is Harvey Elliott.
The midfielder was a regular feature under Jurgen Klopp but when Slot came in and took over, he was often left on the sidelines despite his versatility.
Due to the number of players the Reds had in Elliott’s position last term, he was left out of their plans and with Wirtz joining during the summer transfer window, the Englishman’s opportunities to play were dwindling in front of his eyes.
However, with the lack of form that most of the Reds’ attackers have been in this term, it’s clear that Elliott could have played a part in Slot’s plans this term.
Whether that be on the right wing or in midfield, it feels like the 22-year-old could have helped Liverpool out massively in their time of need.
There’s no knowing what would’ve happened at Anfield if all three of these players stayed on at the club but with the way things are going at the moment, each of them could have been massively important for Slot and his men this term.
