Arne Slot has dropped a massive clue into Liverpool's transfer plans. Here's what we can expect as the window prepares to open.

The transfer window is just days away and it should be a massive one for Liverpool. The Reds spent an absolutely fortune over the summer in an attempt to improve on a title-winning squad but things haven’t met the mark.

It’s been a difficult season as a result, with Liverpool struggling for any real consistency. They’ve had some decent results in recent weeks, though it’s important to remember that they also had decent results to kick-off the campaign before suffering their worst run of form since the 1950s.

Dipping back into the transfer window will offer a chance to steady things - and fix some of the problems Arne Slot and co. have been dealing with. It’s clear that the right fixes aren’t quite lying in the squad.

Can they find them in January, then? And what do they look like?

Arne Slot's transfer hint

So what do Liverpool need? Slot offered a serious clue on Saturday after the Reds beat Wolves 2-1 at Anfield: Pace.

He was talking about the opening goal that saw Jeremie Frimpong assist for Ryan Gravenberch. Slot dropped exactly what made the difference there.

"Pace, that is what [Frimpong] has," he said, per Lewis Steele. "That is so crucial in modern football. The goal he assisted was pure individual ability. Bam bam."

Pace is also something this Liverpool team seriously lacks in attacking areas. None of the forwards they brought in are particularly quick - even if you wouldn't call them slow.

Cody Gakpo isn't exactly about pace, either, while Mo Salah has visibly slowed down. It means the squad doesn't have that sensational pace up top that peak Liverpool sides always have.

Frimpong makes a difference up there, even if he is technically a full-back playing out of position. Thus if Liverpool want elite forwards with proper pace, they'll have to sign one.

It's notable that they didn't replace Luis Diaz, for instance. That leaves a spot in the squad open for a pacey forward - Alexander Isak's injury arguably opens up another one.

Slot sees the extreme value of incredible pace in attack and feels that's what made the difference for Liverpool. There's a reason he keeps playing Frimpong on the wing, after all.

January offers an opportunity to add more - and that's what the Reds will be looking at next month.
