Arne Slot confirms Liverpool signed incredibly fast player
Arne Slot has confirmed Liverpool signed an incredibly fast player in the summer transfer window who has become one of the fastest in the squad.
In the modern game speed is essential. Technique is still the most important quality for a footballer to possess but for a team to have speed is a necessity.
Especially with the way Slot likes to play. Wherever he has managed Slot has always preferred to use fast and explosive wingers.
Yankuba Minteh at Feyenoord immediately springs to mind, but he also worked with Myron Boadu and Calvin Stengs at AZ Alkmaar.
Slot's system very much relies on his attackers playing with a lot of intensity and making fast runs behind the defensive lines.
That's what Liverpool tried to bring to the team this season because with Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz leaving Anfield, the Reds did lose a lot of speed.
How successful this transition has been remains to be seen. It's very much a work in progress. It's also important to note that one of the fastest players in Europe right now - Jeremie Frimpong - has been injured for the majority of the season, which has also had an impact on Slot's attack lacking speed.
It's also perhaps not a surprise that Hugo Ekitike has been the most successful player from all the new signings so far and that's probably because he is extremely fast.
Slot confirmed this himself, revealing that the striker who was signed in the summer has become one of the fastest in the squad.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Slot praised Ekitike for his speed.
“He has many qualities,” Slot said.
“As we can all see, he’s a good finisher, he’s very comfortable on the ball. But what stands out for me is he belongs to the fastest players we have.
“That was one of the things I wanted to add to this team – incredible pace.
“Because I see many of the top teams have one, two, three individuals that have pace that is exceptional."
You can see the plan with Ekitike, and it's probably going to be the plan to add even more speed to the team in the coming months ahead.
That is why Liverpool wanted Antoine Semenyo, and that is also why the likes of Yankuba Minteh and Yan Diomande are also on the club's radar.
These are players full of speed, who could have a massive impact on the way Liverpool go forward if Richard Hughes can lure them to Anfield.
