Arne Slot confirmed he was never fit to manage Liverpool with stunning comment
Arne Slot was never a fit manager for Liverpool despite Premier League glory.
The Dutchman delivered a league title at Anfield much to everyone's delight. It's important to mention that he did this with his own tactical tweaks and adjustments.
There's no doubting Slot's footballing IQ and intelligence. He is a top-level tactician, even if this season his tweaks aren't quite working.
Part of the problem is that to be the head-coach of Liverpool you need to be more than just a tactics guy. You need to be a mental guru, you need to inspire; and you need to manage big egos and young players.
Slot doesn't have the experience to do that. At AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord he didn't deal with as many egos as he is doing at Liverpool. He also wasn't a person who needed to bring and integrate young talent into the team while managing those big egos.
Slot has to do both at Liverpool, and he's not succeeded at all. It was obvious that despite the successful start during the beginning of his reign, he was not quite the right fit.
The first sign of that was immediately after his first competitive game against Ipswich Town.
Slot hooked off Jarell Quansah at half-time after he struggled in the first-half against Liam Delap. This was something we had not really seen from a Liverpool head-coach.
After the full-time whistle, Slot decided to single out Quansah in his post-match press conference with a stunning comment.
"First thing I said - we don't have to speak about tactics if you lose so many duels," he said.
"Jarell lost every duel, many of us lost too many duels. We needed Konate to win the long balls for the number nine. That gave us control.
"They put so much energy in the first half, keeping fighting, playing all over the pitch 1 vs 1, I don't think they could keep up that tempo in the second half."
These were unusual comments from a Liverpool head-coach. Many though celebrated it at the time. It was seen as Liverpool now having a more ruthless side.
It always sat wrong with me. The context is that Slot here was calling out a young player, probably one of Liverpool's best academy graduates at the time, publicly in the media.
Young players need nurture and support. Something Jurgen Klopp provided aplenty during his time at the club.
Slot though never seem to grasp this element. His management of the club's young talent has been very poor to say the least, and that can be overlooked when the results on the pitch are a success.
But when those results aren't coming, it's harder to ignore when so much of Liverpool's financial security depends on promoting young players.
Ultimately, it was from the beginning that Slot made it clear he wasn't quite the right fit to manage Liverpool. The 21 wins in his last 42 matches is just confirmation of that.
