Ibrahima Konate's future has been questioned since the start of the season.

The Frenchman's contract is due to expire at the end of June and, even though fans have believed that the centre-back would extend his stay, the closer we get to the expiry day, the scarier things are getting.

The centre-back hasn't been at his best for most of the 2025-26 campaign but, his recent outing against Paris Saint-Germain proved how good he can be on his day.

Most fans see Konate as Liverpool's replacement for Virgil van Dijk but, if he exits on a free transfer like Trent Alexander-Arnold did last season, it would be far from ideal.

So, this latest update from journalist Nicolo Schira is certainly something that fans will want to listen to.

Ibrahima Konate is now 'one step away' from extending his Liverpool contract

Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson are both going to exit Anfield on free transfers this summer.

And, if Konate followed suit and left upon the expiry of his contract, it would be hard for Liverpool to replace them all, especially since they won't be getting any fees for them.

Indeed, players such as Marcos Senesi could come in on free transfers but in reality, the Reds will want several world class players so that they can be competitive as possible.

And, fortunately for the club, it seems like their luck has finally turned.

"Ibrahima Konatè is one step away to extend the contract with Liverpool," Schira wrote via his personal X account.

"Last details but all the parties involved in the deal are confident to finalize soon.

"The centre-back has turned down a huge bid from a Saudi Club."

Liverpool may not need another new centre-back this summer after all

Seeing as though Konate is now close to extending his Liverpool stay, the Reds may not have to bring in another centre-back this summer.

Jacquet is already guaranteed to be joining and, unless someone such as Giovanni Leoni or Joe Gomez end up exiting, they'll have five options to choose from.

And, if Slot keeps his team lined up in the same way, they're only ever going to need two of them on the pitch at any one time.

Of course, injuries may occur which could change their transfer plans but, at the moment, replacing players such as Salah should be much higher on their agenda.

Slot will want his men to be back competing for trophies next season so, every transfer will have an awful lot of meaning, especially since the Reds will only have a certain amount of money to spend.
