Major Liverpool arrival confirmed by Arne Slot

Change is coming to Liverpool this summer.

Head coach Arne Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes are searching for the right formula to improve the team’s fortunes. That of course means additions in the transfer market first and foremost.

Top targets are reported to include Marcos Senesi, Yan Diomande and Bradley Barcola. The Premier League title-holders require senior cover at centre-back and above all more one-v-one quality out wide.

But changes won’t be limited to the first-team squad.

We could see a shakeup in the Anfield side’s backroom staff too. Slot had John Heitinga alongside him for the title win but lost his Dutch compatriot to Ajax when they offered him the job as head coach.

The Telegraph is now reporting that Heitinga is under consideration for a coaching role at Anfield ahead of the 2026/27 season. And the same report also claims that Slot is close to appointing current Feyenoord staff member Etienne Reijnen to his Liverpool team.

Etienne Reijnen is coming to Liverpool

The Dutchman was unable to move to Merseyside back in 2024 with Slot from Rotterdam owing to work permit issues.

But Robin van Persie’s current assistant looks close to having those problems resolved. That means the set-piece specialist could be coming on board to work with the Liverpool squad ahead of next season.

“Another option is Etienne Reijnen, who worked with Liverpool’s head coach at Feyenoord,” the report reads.

“Work permit issues prevented him joining his old boss on Merseyside in 2024.

“Reijnen, who has a reputation for putting on outstanding sessions and has set-piece expertise, will soon secure the qualifications he needs to be able to work in the UK and Slot – without going into specifics – has confirmed he wants a fresh face to join him.”

Slot wants a new face

Slot on Friday was open about the need to add fresh faces to his Liverpool coaching team - with his side a long way off their title-winning quality.

“In general for a club, it makes sense not only to look at player-wise but also staff-wise,” Slot told the press.

“We are always keeping our eyes open to improve the club and that means it could be a player but also a staff. We always look around to see how we can strengthen.”

Of course this is a further step in the direction of Arne Slot staying on as head coach. Fans have been dismayed by the results and quality of football this season but FSG have stuck resolutely behind their 2024 appointment.

Slot is out of contract in 2027 and right now it looks like he is expanding his powerbase rather than having his duties taken away.
