Madness: Crazy deals leave Liverpool chasing 7 new signings

Liverpool are left needing half a squad after crazy deals saw their options collapse in front of them.

2025 was supposed to be Liverpool's major rebuild. They spent over £400m on new players, reshaping a title-winning squad around Arne Slot and looking to take a step up.

Instead, we're in 2026 and a rebuild is required. Liverpool have a new head coach, holes all over their squad, and a series of expensive signings who haven't lived up to expectations.

Now, the dream here is that the first of those three issues fixes the last of them. Andoni Iraola could be exactly what the group of signings needed to get out of their slump and show the kind of form that Liverpool paid the money for.

But the holes all over the squad? That simply necessitates further signings as the Reds are now incredibly light thanks to a series of unfortunate deals.

We can list them, too: £29m on Giorgi Mamardashvili, £30m on Jeremie Frimpong, failing to renew Ibrahima Konate's contract, letting both Andy Robertson & Mohamed Salah leave, £130m on an unfit Alexander Isak, selling Luis Diaz without a replacement, failing to renew Curtis Jones's contract, and persisting with Federico Chiesa despite zero intention to actually play him.

All decisions and moves were and are questionable.

Mamardashvili, for instance, hasn't set the world alight and now Liverpool are linked with goalkeepers. Frimpong isn't seen as a proper right-back, leaving the club to want a new one. The Athletic are among many outlets saying they're still figuring out how to replace Konate - and may decide not to because they have so many other areas to sign in.

Robertson's exit creates a need for a left-back. Salah's exit creates a need for a right-winger. Isak's lack of fitness, coupled with Hugo Ekitike's injury, leaves Liverpool short in attack just one season after dropping £200m on strikers.

Diaz needs replacing and it seems that Cody Gakpo isn't viewed as enough - despite his big-money contract signed at the start of the season. The Athletic are another reporting interest in Yan Diomande, who would cost over €100m.

Jones's contract situation (he has one year left) could mean he's sold to Inter. Suddenly Liverpool desperately need a new midfielder, which again won't come cheap.

So you're looking at a goalkeeper, a right-back, a left-back, a centre-back, a centre-midfielder, a left-winger, a right-winger and a striker. Maybe they can find a winger who doubles up as a striker.

But as things stand, this is an absolute mess.

Alexander Isak: Situation Summary

Liverpool Campaign and Stats

As of 9 June 2026, Alexander Isak is a Liverpool player, having completed a blockbuster move from Newcastle United on 1 September 2025 for a British-record fee of £125 million. The 26-year-old Swedish international is currently under a long-term contract at Anfield that runs until 30 June 2031. Following a 2025/26 campaign that saw Liverpool finish fifth in the Premier League, Isak is currently involved in international duty with the Sweden national team, having recently started in a friendly match against Greece on 4 June.

Anfield Future

Despite the club's turbulent fifth-place league finish and the recent managerial change from Arne Slot to Andoni Iraola, Isak remains a central figure in Liverpool’s long-term plans. The forward has firmly established himself at the AXA Training Centre since his arrival last summer, and there is no indication that the new hierarchy has any intention of moving the striker on. As the squad prepares for the 2026/27 season, Isak is expected to lead the line under Iraola’s new tactical direction.
