Liverpool will have a decision to make over Luca Stephenson over the summer.

The 22-year-old - whose season has been ended due to a hamstring injury - has enjoyed another very fine campaign on loan.

The midfielder-cum-right back spent the 2024/25 season on loan with Dundee United before returning to Anfield last summer.

The former Sunderland academy star impressed Arne Slot on the club’s pre-season tour - earning himself a contract extension in the process.

Stephenson then embarked on another loan campaign with Dundee United north of the border - where he has again impressed all-comers.

Stephenson could be sold

He has been linked with a move to Rangers in order to replace James Tavernier- while Slot ignored pleas to add him to the first-team ranks back in January.

Capable of playing right-back or centre midfield Stephenson is a versatile campaigner and boasts homegrown status. And while his future might not lie with the first team at Anfield he won’t be short of suitors should Richard Hughes cash in.

The Courier is now claiming that Bolton are seeking a deal for Stephenson - although much will depend on whether or not the Trotters manage to secure promotion to the Championship.

Bolton to sign Stephenson on one condition

“League One promotion chasers Bolton Wanderers are weighing up a summer swoop for Liverpool youngster Luca Stephenson following two impressive campaigns on loan with Dundee United,” the report reads.

Bolton are currently safe in the playoff spots in League One but it’ll be some time before we find out how much they have got to work with in the off-season.

Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin admits defeat in his club’s chase for Stephenson - claiming the player will go for a lot of money.

“Luca is under contract at Liverpool and, given how well he’s done here, I think that would be a considerable transfer fee,” he said.

The report adds that the sums involved could reach well over £1m - which wouldn’t be a bad return on an academy investment.

Right now Stephenson’s Liverpool career isn’t over - but he will need to recover from his latest injury if he is to impress Slot once again in pre-season.
