Brazil midfielder finally ready to join Liverpool after green-lighting move
Liverpool look set to complete a radical midfield overhaul in the summer transfer window.
Richard Hughes neglected to add a midfielder as part of last summer’s £450m spending spree - but that error will soon be corrected.
The Premier League champions have got some doubts surrounding senior members of their midfield at present. Curtis Jones - out of contract in 2027 - could be sold to generate “pure profit” while Wataru Endo may also be permitted to leave.
Liverpool may well even entertain offers for Alexis Mac Allister - who now looks past his best for the Reds.
There has been no shortage of midfield stars linked with an Anfield arrival of late - with Joao Gomes of Wolves now once again cropping up in reports.
Liverpool add Joao Gomes to the list
TEAMtalk states that Liverpool along with Manchester United have got the 25-year-old on their list ahead of Wolves’ impending relegation from the top flight.
“Liverpool have been actively monitoring Gomes in recent weeks, carrying out detailed checks on the Brazilian as they weigh up a potential move,” the report reads.
“Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur have also made enquiries.”
Gomes is under contract with Wolves until 2030 following a renewal signed last year. He first signed for the Molineux outfit back in 2023 from Flamengo - for whom he won the 2022 Copa Libertadores.
Back in his home country the Brazil international revealed that Liverpool would be his preferred destination in the Premier League and he has been linked with a move to Merseyside plenty of times since.
And following a huge role in Wolves’ recent resurgence he now looks set to make that next big step in his career.
"Liverpool are a team I’d play for," he told ESPN Brasil. "I have the greatest desire to play. Playing in the Champions League is my biggest dream and that of my family, my biggest dream in football."
Joao Gomes: Situation summary
João Gomes has developed into Wolves’ midfield heartbeat, a combative, all‑action presence who sets the tone with his aggression, intensity and ability to knit play together.
Nicknamed a “pitbull” at Flamengo, he brings that same edge to the Premier League: relentless in duels, quick over short distances and constantly looking to press, tackle and recover the ball.
In possession he keeps things simple but progressive, favouring short passes, sharp wall‑passes and positive carries through the lines, and has grown from pure ball‑winner into a box‑to‑box midfielder capable of breaking into the box and chipping in with the odd goal.
Gomes set for big move this summer
Gomes joined Wolves from Flamengo in January 2023 and, after establishing himself as a guaranteed starter, signed a new long‑term contract in April 2025 running to 2030 with an option for a further year and no release clause.
That extension effectively hands Wolves control over his next step and makes any sale expensive.
Even so, his form has attracted sustained interest: Liverpool have monitored him for several windows and remain keen ahead of 2026, while Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham have all been linked.
Gomes has previously spoken about a dream move to Liverpool, but barring a major offer Wolves are expected to resist approaches in the short term.
