Liverpool green-light unthinkable exit for £250k per week favourite

These are uncertain times for Liverpool’s core leadership group.

This summer we will see Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah leave. That move threatens to leave the Premier League champions short of experience and winning mentality.

And next summer when Virgil van Dijk’s current contract expires he too is overwhelmingly likely to leave.

Richard Hughes made moves to secure the future of another dressing room leader in the shape of Alisson Becker. The Brazilian goalkeeper, 33, had a one-year clause in his contract activated meaning he is due to remain at Anfield until 2027.

But there is a theory emerging that Liverpool only renewed his contract in order to protect his transfer value with Juventus very much in the hunt for his signature.

Rather than losing the Brazil No1 for free the Merseysiders would be guaranteed a fee for him if he’s sold this summer. Alisson is just coming out of another six-week injury absence - and he has been frequently out of the team over the last few seasons.

Caoimhin Kelleher and latterly Giorgi Mamardashvili have been given the chance to deputise - with real concern over Alisson’s robustness going forward.

Liverpool won't stand in Alisson's way

The player is reported to be keen on linking up with Luciano Spalletti - who coached him at Roma - and there is a genuine pathway emerging for this move to happen.

Indeed trusted club insider James Pearce is now reporting that Liverpool club bosses are ready to give Alisson a green light to seek a move to Juve - although admitting that the Italians will struggle to match his reported £250k per week salary.

Referencing Arne Slot’s comments about the way things are done at Liverpool Pearce hinted that the door is very much open for Alisson to return to Serie A.

“The Dutchman didn’t exactly slam the door shut regarding a possible summer exit for Alisson,” the report reads.

“Maybe that’s because Slot is only part of the decision-making process with sporting director Richard Hughes and Fenway Sports Group CEO of football, Michael Edwards.

“Maybe it depends on what offers for Alisson are forthcoming, as triggering their one-year option protects his value and avoids the prospect of losing another star for nothing.

“Although in terms of Juventus, it’s hard to envisage them paying a significant transfer fee as well as matching his wages of around £250,000 ($338,000) per week.

“Maybe it hinges on whether the player weighs up his options in the coming weeks and ultimately decides he wants to embark on a new challenge.

"Given his service, it wouldn’t be easy to stand in his way.”

How would Liverpool replace Alisson?

Liverpool would then have to embark on their succession plan - which would include using Mamardashvili as No1 going forward.

He hasn’t been overly impressive in his first season in English football but the Georgian comes with strong pedigree owing to his form at Valencia as well as in the international arena.

Recently it’s been down to Freddie Woodman to guard Liverpool’s goal - with both Mamardashvili and Alisson out of action. The South American goalkeeping legend is expected to return to the Liverpool XI for the weekend game against Manchester United.
