Liverpool told chances of keeping 22-goal star at Anfield

Liverpool now only have around a month or so to get their first-team squad sorted.

Most of the Reds' fanbase probably expected there to be a lot more movement in Anfield this summer.

Their 2025-26 campaign was a travesty and was one of the worst ways for them to try and retain their Premier League title.

It's obvious to fans that there are many areas of the Reds' squad that need upgrading and, without bringing these players in, it doesn't feel like there's any way for them to do any better than they did last time around.

At the moment, it does feel like some players are going to have to be sold for Liverpool to make another move which is rather scary.

Several players have obviously already been linked with moves away and now, Lewis Steele has shared the likelihood of one of them exiting this summer.

Lewis Steele believes there's a 50-50 chance of Curtis Jones staying at Liverpool

One of the main players to have been linked with a move away from Liverpool this summer is Curtis Jones.

The Englishman was not trusted by Arne Slot at all last term which led to him spending an awful lot of time on the bench or out of position at right-back.

That is, despite Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch both performing rather poorly throughout the season.

If Slot was still in charge, it feels like Jones would already be gone but, now that Andoni Iraola is at the helm, everything is up in the air.

And, at the moment, that's how things seem to be staying with Steele sharing his latest news on the future of the midfielder to Anfield Index.

"I think it would be good for Jones to get a chance under the new manager," he said.

"I don’t know whether he’d made his mind up already that he wants to go.

"I have sort of publicly said he wants him to stay for the long term.

"[I] don’t know whether that was just talk or not. As we stand with a month or so to go over the window, it’s still probably 50/50 whether he stays or goes."

Liverpool need to keep Curtis Jones at Anfield no matter what

Even though Jones wasn't trusted last season, that doesn't mean that he isn't a good player with his 22-goals for Liverpool more than proving that.

Whenever the Englishman was brought on or Slot chose to start him, he was always one of the most energetic players on the pitch and often looked like one of Liverpool's best players.

However, for one reason or another, Slot had his favourites which massively hurt Jones' progress and forced him to think about life away from Liverpool.

But, now that he's entered the final year of his contract, he's obviously not going to be worth anywhere near as much as he actually is.

If Liverpool don't agree a new deal with him or move him on before the summer transfer window slams shut, by January, he'll be able to talk to clubs outside of England about joining them on a free transfer.

The Reds have already been stung by this two seasons in a row with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson all leaving for nothing.

And, even though they can afford to do this, they don't really want to be making a habit of it, especially if they're wanting to become one of the most dominant teams in the world again.

So, all in all, rather than going out and buying a new midfielder this summer, Liverpool should really try their best to keep Jones in L4 and use him on a more regular basis rather than finding someone else to bring in who's likely to be half as good as him.
