Liverpool have a chance to bank solid €53m of profit after just one year. This would be incredible.

Liverpool made a lot of deals in 2025. They overhauled a title-winning squad, believing they could upgrade on what Jurgen Klopp had left in 2024.

Things went backwards, however, and Liverpool are now looking once again at building a new squad. And that means potentially reconsidering some of their moves last summer.

There’s a particularly interesting one to revisit, too: Darwin Nunez. The Uruguayan is expected to leave Al-Hilal on a free transfer just a year after joining the club.

Liverpool actually sold him to Al-Hilal for €53m (Sky Sports), such was his value. TeamTalk is among those claiming that he could now re-join the Reds for free.

That’s about as pure a profit as you can possibly get. Liverpool conceivably end up with both the €53m and the player, should they wrap up a deal for Nunez.

We’d love to see it happen as this squad is, by completely chance, crying out for a player with his exact skillset. The fact it comes from a player who already knows the club and most of the squad is a magnificent bonus.

€53m and the player you got the money for. What a fantastic piece of business that would be.

Darwin Nunez: Situation Summary

Al-Hilal Departure and Free Agency

As of 9 June 2026, Darwin Núñez is a free agent following the mutual termination of his contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. The 26-year-old Uruguayan forward’s stint in the Middle East ended prematurely after he was de-registered from the club’s Saudi Pro League squad in February 2026 to accommodate the arrival of Karim Benzema due to foreign-player restrictions. Núñez made 24 appearances for Al-Hilal across all competitions during his single season in Riyadh, contributing nine goals and five assists.

Anfield Return Speculation

Following his release, Núñez has been heavily linked with a sensational return to Liverpool. Reports confirm that the Reds have been offered the chance to re-sign the forward on a free transfer, a prospect that has gained traction following the appointment of new head coach Andoni Iraola. While Liverpool, Chelsea, and Newcastle United are all reportedly "positioning themselves" to evaluate a potential move, sources indicate that Núñez is personally keen on an Anfield reunion. Liverpool’s hierarchy is currently weighing whether to pursue the transfer to bolster their attacking options for the 2026/27 campaign.
