Liverpool fans were left stunned when reports emerged last week that there had been talks with Inter over Curtis Jones.

Several top sources - including Gianluca di Marzio and Fabrizio Romano claimed that club-to-club contact had taken place.

The deal ultimately fell apart with the 24-year-old staying with his boyhood club throughout the winter transfer window. But these are worrying times for the Premier League champions with regard to Jones.

The midfielder was also the subject of intense transfer speculation earlier last week - linking him with a move to Tottenham. Clearly these reports aren’t conjured from thin air and there may well be a genuine risk that Jones leaves soon.

The Premier League winner last signed a new contract back in 2022. He was very much a squad player under Jurgen Klopp in those days - and is unlikely to be among Liverpool’s top earners.

Given his increased importance to the team over the last couple of seasons it would take a pretty sizeable pay rise to convince him to sign a new deal.

Did Jones turn down Liverpool offer?

And with his contract running out in summer 2027 - just a little over a year away - Liverpool don’t have time on their side. And the mechanics of the proposed Inter deal - as reported by Italian media - make it seem as though the club are open to a sale.

By all accounts Liverpool were ready to sign off on an initial six-month loan deal which Jones was happy with. And it was to be followed up with a €40m option to buy - and it’s here where the deal fell down according to the Italian side of the story.

Liverpool - knowing that Jones would be out of contract in only one year - were determined to force through a one-year contract renewal before sending him to San Siro.

Fee set at €40m

The deal didn’t go through - despite a seeming nod of approval from all parties - which may suggest that Jones has turned down Liverpool’s efforts to renew his contract.

“The deal had actually already been signed between Inter and Liverpool for a loan with an option to buy set at €40 million,” the report from L'Interista reads.

“But, shortly after the verbal agreement between the parties, an obstacle arose that is currently preventing the deal from being successfully concluded: the contract currently binding Jones to Liverpool.

“Its expiry in 2027, in fact, forces the Reds to try to finalise the contract renewal of the 2001-born player before his possible departure in January.

“If such an agreement is not reached, then Jones's transfer to Inter would be permanently blocked.”

The power is in Jones' hands

Right now it would appear he is ready to run down his deal and take what’s on offer elsewhere rather than agreeing to the terms currently on the table.

The power lies in the England international’s hands - well aware of his emerging status as one of European football’s top passers.

If Liverpool are to get a renewal over the line they are going to have to meet the playmaker’s demands. Otherwise over the next few months we are going to see a lot more speculation linking Jones with a move away.
