'Arrogant' Arne Slot crossed the line with star players claims astonishing report

Arne Slot lost his job as Liverpool head coach last weekend.

The 47-year-old Dutchman got off to the best possible start when he replaced Jurgen Klopp as head coach. The Anfield side won the 2024/25 Premier League title at a canter and added £450m worth of talent to the squad last summer.

But the Merseysiders got worse - not better - in Slot’s sophomore campaign and slumped to a fifth-place finish.

The Dutchman could not survive his end-of-season review with Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards - who took the decision to dispense with his services.

Slot was originally under contract until 2027 and FSG now need to pay around £7m to deal with the sacking. Andoni Iraola is lined up to take over from the former Feyenoord head coach - and stories are now beginning to appear which illustrate how Slot lost control.

SPORT BILD is carrying an astonishing report which claims an “arrogant” Slot alienated star players inside Anfield.

He challenged new signings on the basis that they hadn’t played their part in winning the title - and also made disdainful remarks about signings who were brought in from Germany.

Given that a fair percentage of Liverpool’s squad had plied their trade in the Bundesliga this kind of criticism didn’t go down well.

'Arrogant' Slot crossed the line

“One problem was his handling of his star players,” the report reads.

“While he was praised at the start of the season for his sensitive approach following the tragic death of star striker Diogo Jota († 28), he crossed the line elsewhere.

“According to SPORT BILD, objective criticism became mixed with arrogance and personal barbs.

“For example, he needled summer signings with questions like, "Did you win the Premier League?"

“When analyzing players with Bundesliga experience, he made comments along the lines of, "You can play like that in Germany."

“To put things in perspective: In 2025 alone, Florian Wirtz (23), Jeremie Frimpong (25, both from Leverkusen), and Hugo Ekitiké (23, from Frankfurt) arrived from the Bundesliga for a combined transfer fee of more than €250 million.

“Their teammates Konaté, Szoboszlai, Gravenberch, and Endo also originally came directly from Germany; record signing Isak played for Dortmund. Understandably, Slot's words didn't go down well with them.”

Liverpool performed far beneath their best form during the season - losing 20 matches overall including 12 in the Premier League. Slot also presided over two poor cup runs - ending in humiliation against both Crystal Palace and Manchester City.

Paris Saint-Germain also took the Reds apart over two legs in the Champions League - and by the end of the season it was clear the fight had gone out of the defending champions. Slot paid the ultimate price.
