Liverpool could be about to hand their rivals a £5.2m windfall

The summer transfer window is always interesting.

Some clubs make changes to their teams every year while others only bring one or two players in every couple of years.

Liverpool went against the grain last summer and ended up spending around £450 million on new arrivals which meant that players such as Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz joined the club.

Most fans thought they'd be the best team in the world but the 2025-26 season has proven that there's still several areas among their ranks that could do with upgrading.

And, now that Mohamed Salah is leaving, their attacking line is going to take a massive hit which is exactly why new attackers are on top of their shortlist.

However, if Arne Slot manages to sign one specific Liverpool target, he could be handing their arch-rivals a hefty financial windfall.

Anthony Gordon has long been linked with a Liverpool switch.

The attacker has been at the top of the Reds' shortlist for as long as many can remember with rumours about the future of the Englishman popping up in every transfer window.

Gordon would be an ideal addition for Liverpool as, even though he's a natural left-winger, he can also be used as a striker if needed.

And, with Bayern Munich now also interested in acquiring his services, the Reds will have to move fast if they want to sign him.

However, a fresh report from The Athletic has mentioned that, if Liverpool do end up buying him, they would end up giving the Toffees a £5.2 million windfall due to the 15 per cent profit clause they have.

"Newcastle have not actively engaged with the Gordon speculation and will not be drawn on a likely asking price, though sources with knowledge suggest they would like to receive around £80m for the forward," they wrote.

"Newcastle have a further incentive to recoup a significant fee, given that The Athletic has learned that Everton inserted a sell-on clause into the deal that took Gordon to Tyneside.

"The Merseysiders are due 15 per cent of any profit Newcastle make, so that is a factor in any discussions over Gordon’s asking price."

As mentioned, now that Salah is exiting Anfield, a new attacker or two will need to be introduced to the Reds' ranks.

Fans were already demanding that Liverpool signed a new forward in the summer due to the poor performances of Cody Gakpo but, now that Salah is set to leave, at least another two attackers will need to be brought in.

Several players such as Yan Diomande, Gordon, Bazoumana Toure and Morgan Rogers have all been linked with a move this summer.

However, since the Reds won't be able to bring anyone in without moving one or two members of their first-team squad on, Slot and Richard Hughes will need to ensure they're doing the right thing before finalising any deals.

No matter who they sign, nobody will be able to replace Salah but, if they sign someone outside of the Premier League, it could end up being a massive mistake as they'll need time to adjust.

So, that's why the futures of Gordon and Rogers are rather intriguing, especially since both would cost between £80 million and £100 million to sign.

Nobody knows what Liverpool's plans are but, with all the rumours that have begun to surface, a new attacker is almost certainly on the agenda.
