Liverpool can solve one of their main problems with £80m star

Liverpool may have spent more than £600 million over the last couple of seasons but, they still have a few glaring issues among their ranks that need to be solved.

Some problems that they had at the end of the 2025-26 season have obviously been ironed out and fixed but others are going to take a bit more time.

We're also still very early in the season so, once players get fully used to Andoni Iraola's style of play and what he expects from them, things will probably run much smoother.

However, until then, the transfer market could end up being the Reds' best friend or even their worst enemy.

But, thanks to a fresh report that has just emerged, it now seems like £80 million could help them solve one of their main issues.

Everyone knows that Liverpool's midfield is their weakest area at the moment.

Indeed, they haven't managed to replace Mohamed Salah yet but, with Victor Munoz and Bradley Barcola being added to Andoni Iraola's ranks, Liverpool seem to have enough firepower to fill the void he left behind.

Of course, they'd be much better off if they actually managed to bring a natural right-winger in but, after the fees they were being quoted for Ismaila Sarr and Yankuba Minteh, it's not hard to understand why a right-winger wasn't signed.

So, despite Liverpool's attack still needing reinforcement, their midfielders are their main issues.

At the moment, Alexis Mac Allister is their best central midfielder by a country mile with his ability to defend and attack allowing him to become key in Iraola's system.

But, since the Reds still need to shore up their midfield ranks a bit more, the fact that Crystal Palace would be willing to sell Adam Wharton for £80 million will be music to their ears.

"Wharton looks set to be available for a fee in the region of £80m this January, according to some sources," Caught Offside wrote.

"It will be interesting to see what CFC do, but there is an increased urgency to strengthen in the middle of the park, even if there hasn’t previously been unanimous backing for Wharton.

"The 22-year-old has also been on the radar of Liverpool."

Wharton has been on Liverpool's shortlist for as long as anyone can remember.

The Englishman has become one of Palace's most important players over the last few years and, since Elliott Anderson joined Manchester City for £116 million this summer, the £80 million that Pierre Sage wants for Wharton is justified.

His range of passing and ability to stay back and defend are likely two of the key reasons why Liverpool want him.

The fact that he's homegrown is also a massive help as, at the moment, the Reds have managed to fill all of their foreign places in their squad.

Wharton is also only 22 years old so, even though he's already at the top of his game, there's plenty of time for him to grow into an even better player than he already is.

£80 million may seem quite steep but, if it helps solidify Liverpool's ranks and ensures that they can start challenging for silverware again, the Englishman would be worth every penny.
