Incredible news as midfield maestro is finally coming back
A brilliant midfielder is finally back at Liverpool which is great news for Andoni Iraola.
Liverpool's midfield is going to have to be overhauled under their new Spanish manager. While much of the focus this summer has been on Liverpool's defence and attack, the midfield is quietly emerging as an area that could see significant change over the coming months.
On paper, it looks like one of the strongest parts of the squad. However, there are a number of questions hanging over key players that could force Liverpool into making some important decisions before the transfer window closes.
Curtis Jones is one of them. The academy graduate is now entering the final year of his contract, and there has been little progress on a new deal. Liverpool have traditionally been reluctant to allow valuable assets to run down their contracts, which means the club may soon have to decide whether to push harder for an extension or consider offers if interest arrives from elsewhere.
Then there is Alexis Mac Allister, whose situation is arguably even more intriguing. The Argentine remains one of Liverpool's most gifted midfielders and is capable of controlling games with his intelligence, passing range and technical quality. At his best, he is a player who can dictate the tempo and unlock defences with a single moment of quality.
However, with Iraola expected to introduce a more aggressive, high-intensity style of football, there are growing questions about whether Mac Allister is the perfect fit for the demands of that system. While his quality is unquestionable, Liverpool may have to consider whether he suits the direction the club wants to move in under the new manager.
The timing is also important. Mac Allister's contract is now moving into its final two years, placing Liverpool at a point where they must start thinking carefully about his long-term future.
With reported interest from clubs such as Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid, this summer could represent the ideal opportunity to maximise his value if the club were ever open to a sale.
If Liverpool lose Mac Allister and Jones then they are going to have to invest in the midfield. A number of potential midfield targets have been sought out.
There's Lamine Camara, Mamadou Sangare, and Liverpool could also look at the likes of Alex Scott or Adam Wharton. Not to mention Angelo Stiller has previously been linked on the club's radar as well.
But there's also a midfielder from within who could provide depth for Iraola's side.
Stefan Bajcetic has had a torrid time with injuries. He's missed almost a year of football due to persistent issues after getting surgery around this time last year.
Since then there have been murmurs of his return but Bajcetic hasn't been spotted in training nor has he stepped a foot to play a competitive game since.
It will be over 12 months when we see him back playing again. Because that is the good news. Bajcetic is back.
He posted on his Instagram account that he is at the AXA training centre ahead of pre-season, and that he isn't just doing gym work but he's also doing a bit of ball work as well.
That would suggest that he is going to be fit and ready for pre-season, and it means Liverpool would get their midfield maestro back at last.
Bajcetic has had a lot of injury problems since he burst to prominence as an 18-year-old. He's still only 21-years-old at the moment and if he is able to come back and be the level that he was when he played on loan at Las Palmas in La Liga the season prior to last, then Liverpool have a hell of a player on their hands.
Given the Spanish connection with Iraola, and the lack of holding midfielders in the squad, Bajcetic could easily fight himself into having a squad role next season and bolstering Liverpool's depth in return.
