Curtis Jones future takes another twist as Liverpool decision looms

Curtis Jones' future has been one of the most-talked about sagas of the season.

During the January transfer window, Inter Milan tried to make an offer for the Englishman which Liverpool ended up rejecting.

And, since the Reds haven't given him a new deal yet, rumours are still lurking about his future with Inter the most interested team once again.

At the moment, around €10 million separates the two clubs from sealing a deal for Jones.

However, a fresh update has just emerged from Anfield which could change things drastically.

Curtis Jones is waiting on Andoni Iraola's decision before moving on from Liverpool

When called upon by Arne Slot, Jones has been one of Liverpool's best midfielders.

The Englishman is one of the Reds' hardest workers and, without him this term, it's unclear how much worse off the club would have been.

Indeed, he may have been given a decent chunk of playing time by Slot but, with all the right-back issues that Liverpool have had this term, Jones was mainly used as their full-back.

This is obviously far from ideal, especially when Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch were performing extremely poorly for most of the season.

The lack of trust Slot had in Jones led him to seek an Anfield exit but now, according to La Gazzetta Dello Sport, that could all be about to change now that Andoni Iraola is in charge.

"In the Nerazzurri's plans, he would be an alternative to Englishman Curtis Jones, the club's undisputed favorite," they wrote.

"Curtis has a Reds heart, but his beloved Liverpool side has rejected him and is now simply waiting to clarify his position with new Basque manager Iraola.

"The ten million-odd gap between supply and demand, which still needs to be narrowed, requires finding alternatives, provided the new midfielder can change pace and beat his opponents.

"That's what Chivu wants, right there among Calhanoglu, Barella, Zielinski, Sucic, and Mkhitaryan."

Andoni Iraola must keep hold of Curtis Jones no matter what

Before Iraola was appointed as the Reds' head coach, it felt almost guaranteed that Jones would be leaving this summer.

Slot clearly didn't see him in his plans and, even if he did, he'd probably still end up using him at right-back if he had the chance.

However, now that Iraola is at the helm, he's proven that he's happy to use younger players rather than ones who have been at the club for a long time.

So, while the Spaniard being appointed could be a good thing for Jones, for Mac Allister, it could easily be the end of the line.

Jones' style of play matches really well with Iraola's and, if the Reds end up getting the transfer of a new defensive midfielder over the line, they could easily form a dynamic duo next term.

A new number six could also help with moving Gravenberch back to his natural position rather than his current role.

There are a lot of decisions that still need to be made by Iraola but, the fact that Jones is staying put for now is surely a good sign.
