Alexander Isak to Liverpool remains INEVITABLE despite latest Newcastle update

Alexander Isak to Liverpool is a saga that will carry on right until the final week of the summer.

Newcastle have been sent into disarray over the last three weeks and with just the same amount of time left in the transfer window before it closes, it's going to be nip and tuck as to whether he signs.

On Saturday afternoon, a bizarre update was published by Luke Edwards at The Telegraph - one of the main journalists covering the transfer saga - and it left Liverpool fans feeling totally confused.

The claim was that Newcastle's not-for-sale stance hasn't changed since the start of the summer and despite the striker's intention to leave and subsequent acts of dissent to try and force a move, they will still be expecting him to be on Tyneside in September, not on Merseyside with Liverpool.

Isak to Liverpool still remains inevitable

Even after reading the line "he [Isak] will be denied a move in this transfer window", it feels like there is a twist in the tail still to come. The speculation won't suddenly end and this update certainly hasn't put the full-stop on Isak's future that Newcastle fans might have hoped it would do.

This is because of an under the radar quote Eddie Howe said in his press conference yesterday.

A report asked the question: "Does there come a point with Alex where the club has to draw a line and say he's staying, or is it not that straightforward?"

In response, Eddie Howe said: "I don't think it's that straightforward, otherwise we would have done that a long time ago. I don't think we're in a position to be able to do that currently. I don't want to go into too much detail because I don't think that's right. I think I've probably said enough."

As such, if you excuse the pun, it doesn't appear as though everything is a black and white as it's made out to be. Part and parcel of that will no doubt have been Isak's refusal to engage with the club.

Liverpool's initial interest sparked the fire and since the Swede announced his intention to consider a move away from Newcastle, it's been impossible to write anything off. Edwards' attempt seemingly ignores Howe's view on things and until other sources back him up, it's an unsubstantiated claim.

Now that Darwin Nunez's sale to Al-Hilal looks all but wrapped up, another forward will need to be brought into the club, whether this is Isak or other rumoured moves such as Bradley Barcola at PSG or Rodrygo Goes at Real Madrid. The attacking department is suddenly looking a little bit bare.

Of course, Cody Gakpo can fill in for Luis Diaz on the left, with Rio Ngumoha now being considered a full-time member of the first-team, with Mohamed Salah playing off the left, Hugo Ekitike down the middle and Florian Wirtz able to comfortably play a few different positions, but we're definitely short.

It terms of Liverpool's priorities, it appears as though Isak is still the main target, but Newcastle will need to show a willingness to engage in negotiations for the Reds to return to the table. Furthermore, a centre-back also needs to be brought in and time is running out for us to get our business done.

Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards should be trusted over the next few weeks to make the right calls, as we have done all summer, but things are getting a little twitchy. Isak to Liverpool still feels inevitable, but until it's official, nothing should be taken for granted. There is plenty more work to do.
