Liverpool are now one step closer to signing their next Mohamed Salah and leading the race for him.

The departure of the Egyptian will mark the end of one of the most important eras in the club's modern history, and replacing him this summer will be an enormous challenge no one is truly prepared for.

For years, Salah has been far more than just Liverpool’s star attacker.

He has been the focal point of the entire attack and one of the club’s most reliable performers season after season.

His consistency has been extraordinary. While most forwards go through long dips in form, Salah has continued to produce goals and assists at an elite level almost every single year since arriving at Anfield.

That reliability is what makes his potential exit so difficult to deal with.

Even during seasons where he has not looked quite at his explosive best, Salah has still ended up deciding huge matches and producing numbers most attackers could only dream of.

Time and again, he has delivered in the biggest moments, whether through a crucial goal, a moment of creativity or simply his ability to carry Liverpool forward when the team needed him most.

What also made Salah unique was his versatility. He was never just a traditional winger stuck out wide. He could drift inside onto his stronger foot, run in behind defences, link play creatively and finish like an elite striker inside the penalty area.

In many ways, he operated more like a complete forward than a conventional wide player.

That is why replacing him is so complicated. Liverpool are not simply losing pace or goals. They are potentially losing one of the most complete and dependable attackers the Premier League has seen in the modern era.

Since his arrival in 2017, he has owned the right flank, holding that role with little genuine competition for nearly a decade.

Now, Liverpool face the daunting challenge of finding a successor - one that is far easier said than done.

There is no simple, like-for-like replacement for Mohamed Salah, which is exactly why Liverpool face such a difficult task this summer.

Richard Hughes is not only trying to replace one of the club’s greatest-ever attackers, but he is also still dealing with the gap left behind by Luis Diaz following his departure last summer. Liverpool never properly brought in a natural replacement, and that lack of depth in the wide areas has become increasingly obvious over the course of the season.

Whenever Salah or Cody Gakpo have been unavailable, Liverpool have often had to rely on players operating out of position or short-term solutions that never quite balanced the attack properly.

At times, the frontline has looked far too predictable. Liverpool have lacked a natural winger capable of stretching the pitch, isolating defenders and consistently winning one-vs-one battles in wide areas. That explosiveness used to be one of the defining features of the team.

Because of that, signing a new right-sided attacker now feels like Liverpool’s biggest priority. More importantly, they need someone who brings a different profile to Salah rather than trying to directly copy what he offered for so many years.

But there is a dream signing who could very much become the next Salah at Liverpool, and who has predominantly played as a right-winger in his career so far but could also play on the left.

His name is PSG's Ibrahim Mbaye, who has been on Liverpool's radar before.

Mbaye is 18-year-old and he's regarded as an outstanding talent, who has played close to 50 senior games for PSG already which showcased just how talented he is.

However, he's still looking to move on from Paris this summer, given the sheer number of players in his positions at the club.

According to transfer expert Ekrem Konur writing on X, Liverpool are leading the race to sign the Senegalese youngster.

If you saw his recent two goals in his last two matches for PSG, you could understand why this would be such an exciting move.

Mbaye does love to cut into his stronger foot and the fact that he is very quick works in his favour as well. His goal against Lens on Wednesday night was very Salah esque in both the finish and the way he started the move in his own half. Mbaye is an incredible talent.

As far as players who could become the next Salah at Anfield, Mbaye could be a strong candidate.
