Liverpool's pre-season campaign is all about giving the young players a chance to impress.

Arne Slot's first-team squad for the season is always open and anyone who proves they can be a difference-maker, regardless of their age, will be duly considered in his plans moving forward.

Over the summer a number of players have stood out, not least Rio Ngumoha, Ben Doak, Luca Stephenson and Amara Nallo, but one name has really jumped off the page of the team sheet.

His name is Trey Nyoni, an 18-year-old Englishman who plays mostly in midfield but has proved he can occasionally do a job in defence. His ability to move around the pitch has been really impressive.

Nyoni set for a breakout season

According to Paul Joyce at The Times, the midfielder is set for a more substantial role in Slot's team.

It is his understanding that since Tyler Morton has now officially moved to Lyon in a deal worth £15m that Nyoni will take his place as one of the fringe players in the squad on a full-time basis.

The first-team set-up is particularly competitive, especially with Alexis Mac Allister, Florian Wirtz, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, Curtis Jones, Wataru Endo, Harvey Elliott and Stefan Bajcetic already making up the main players leading the teams engine room this season.

But Nyoni thoroughly deserves his call-up after a really strong pre-season campaign, where he has shone with the spotlight on him. The composure and confidence he's showing is rare at his age.

Of course, this should will not necessarily suggest that he will get regular minutes. After all, he's still in the youthful stage of his career and he has a lot of development still to do, but he is impressive.

Playing more often than just the domestic cup matches will do him the world of good and if he delivers a consistent run of solid performances, then we could easily see him play a substantial role.

Ngumoha will be hoping to follow a similar path to Nyoni - now that Luis Diaz has moved to Bayern Munich, a spot at left-wing has opened up. Of course, the winger is only 16 years old, so he will need to be managed particularly carefully, but it's difficult to ignore four goal contributions in three pre-season matches and his finish against Athletic Bilbao at Anfield on Monday night was special.

But it just reinforces just how accessible Liverpool's first-team is due to the pathway laid by academy graduates over the years such as Curtis Jones, Conor Bradley and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
