Liverpool could make a bold and unusual transfer to replace a homegrown talent.

The Times report that Liverpool are 'aware' of the release clause in Denzel Dumfries' contract at Inter. That clause is for a mere €25m - well below his actual market value.

Liverpool nearly signed Dumfries back in January after asking Inter about a potential loan. That came to nothing and honestly, made little sense as the Dutchman had been out injured for months at that stage.

But it seems the Reds' interest remains. The report suggests Liverpool are weighing up a move and it's unknown at this stage whether they'll bite at the set price.

It's a strange one, though. Liverpool's interest is purely based on Conor Bradley being injured long-term and it's impossible to imagine they'd entertain signing the 30-year-old Dumfries if he were fit.

Perhaps Liverpool sign him on the basis that he can be a starting right-back until Bradley returns, perhaps justifying moving for a player at this age. But then, what about Jeremie Frimpong? Is that not his role?

So it feels like replacing Bradley, in all honesty. Moving for a player who would take his role for the next few years and rotate at right-back with Frimpong.

That's a bold and semi-crazy decision, really. It seems entirely unnecessary. Unless, of course, this Bradley injury is far worse than thought.

Denzel Dumfries: Situation Summary

Inter Milan Performance and Stats

As of 24 April 2026, Denzel Dumfries remains a vital component of Inter Milan’s pursuit of the Scudetto. The 30-year-old wing-back has made 31 appearances this season, contributing three goals and six assists in 2,410 minutes of Serie A action. Statistically, he continues to excel in offensive transitions, ranking in the 88th percentile for progressive carries and maintaining an 82% tackle success rate. His physical presence was particularly evident in Inter’s recent 2–1 victory over AC Milan, where he registered an assist and a 7.8 FotMob rating.

Contract Negotiations and Transfer Interest

Dumfries’ future at the San Siro is currently at a crossroads. After months of speculation, reports from 22 April suggest he is close to signing a new contract extension until June 2028, which would include a release clause of approximately €50 million. This comes after persistent interest from the Premier League, with Manchester United and Aston Villa reportedly monitoring his situation. While Inter were previously open to a sale to balance their books, manager Simone Inzaghi has prioritised retaining the Dutchman’s experience for next season’s revamped Champions League campaign.

International Role

A stalwart for the Netherlands, Dumfries has accumulated 68 caps as of April 2026. He played a key role in their flawless World Cup qualifying campaign and is expected to be Ronald Koeman's starting right-back for the 2026 World Cup this June.
