Liverpool make surprise pick to REPLACE senior midfielder
Liverpool have made a surprise choice to replace one of their midfielders. We weren’t sure he even needed replacing...
Liverpool have overhauled every area of their squad this summer and they’re not even done. The Reds still want to bring in Marc Guehi at centre-back and Alexander Isak to revitalise their attack.
Of course, a lot of work has gone in already. New goalkeepers in Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi and Freddie Woodman. New full-backs on both flanks with Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong.

The attack has seen Rio Ngumoha promoted to senior level, while Hugo Ekitiké and record-signing Florian Wirtz offer something new centrally. It means the only place Arne Slot and co. haven’t changed is in the middle of the park.
And that’s a surprise. After all, that was the one area they did try to boost in 2024 with their pursuit of Martin Zubimendi.
Now they’ve decided that’s the one area they don’t need to touch. Almost, anyway. It appears they’re making one minor change - and it’s a surprising one.
Stefan Bajcetic in, Tyler Morton out
Tyler Morton joined Lyon this summer, one year after he was supposed to leave Liverpool. The midfielder was heavily linked with Bayer Leverkusen in 2024 but the Reds' failure to sign Zubimendi meant they wanted him around to boost the numbers.
Of course, Morton barely played last season and his exit was inevitable. We didn't imagine he'd need replacing, either.
But Paul Joyce reports that Liverpool have decided to hold onto Stefan Bajcetic for that spot in the squad. Bajcetic carries the same bonus Morton had in being homegrown - especially useful for the UEFA Champions League squad.
The most surprising thing about this, though, is less that Morton was replaced and more that it's Bajcetic doing it. He looked absolutely certain to leave Liverpool this summer, either permanently or on loan.
Joyce, however, suggests Liverpool feel he can develop further under Slot. We're certainly thrilled to see them try - it wasn't too long ago that Bajcetic was the next big thing at Anfield.
Perhaps sticking around this season will help him find that level again. Injuries robbed him of all momentum but if he can stay fit, Bajcetic can absolutely play a solid role.
