Rio Ngumoha has enjoyed a meteoric rise for Liverpool.

The winger was signed from Chelsea aged just 15 in summer 2024 - and has rapidly progressed through the youth and academy ranks.

Ngumoha, now 17, was the star of the show in the Premier League title winners’ 3-2 win over Newcastle at St. James’ Park recently.

He scored the winner late on - a stunning strike that has been nominated for the top flight’s August goal of the month competition.

New contract imminent

Liverpool are still waiting to announce a new contract for Ngumoha - who became eligible for a first professional deal upon his 17th birthday.

Originally placed with the club’s under-18 sector, Ngumoha moved quickly through UEFA Youth League and Premier League 2 level - even making his first-team debut in Arne Slot’s first season in charge.

That historic moment came in the FA Cup defeat of Accrington in January - and he is now a fixture in the squad.

Real Madrid target Ngumoha

Richard Hughes was content to sell Luis Diaz last summer so as not to impede the development of Ngumoha - who now presents a genuine option on the left of the attack.

But Liverpool must pay attention as always to Real Madrid. Talk is growing in the Spanish capital that Xabi Alonso’s side will try to steal in and cut a deal with Ngumoha.

Ngumoha a 'strategic' Madrid signing

“Real Madrid is once again looking to England for young talent, and this time its target is Rio Ngumoha, Liverpool's new gem,” a report in Fichajes reads.

“Real Madrid's board considers the English striker a strategic target, aware that other European clubs could also enter the bidding.”

Liverpool need to get a deal announced for Ngumoha as soon as possible in order to quell interest from the Bernabeu and elsewhere around Europe.

“The board's objective is clear: to prevent another European giant from poaching their newest star, something that has already happened to other youth players in the past,” the report states of Liverpool’s contract offer.
