New right-back is coming after insider confirms change needed
Liverpool are facing a major shakeup in the transfer window this summer.
Richard Hughes and Arne Slot oversaw £450m worth of spending last summer for the Premier League champions but there are still gaping holes in the squad.
The Anfield side require a new centre-back, centre-forward and a couple of one-v-one specialists on the wing.
There are even reports that a new central midfielder could be coming on board as Slot and Hughes plot getting back on track following a disappointing campaign.
One area that is requiring attention - according to trusted club insider Paul Joyce - is right-back.
Paul Joyce says we will sign a right-back
The position was addressed last summer when Jeremie Frimpong was signed from Bayer Leverkusen and Conor Bradley given a new contract.
But the plan to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold has not gone to plan - with Bradley on the sidelines once again with a serious knee injury and Frimpong either unfit or unreliable at right-back this season.
Joe Gomez, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Curtis Jones have all been pressed into action at right-back this season with Arne Slot affording precious few minutes to the only other specialists in sight in Calvin Ramsay.
Now it appears that Hughes has seen enough with a right-back in Liverpool’s sights.
Dumfries and Palestra linked
“The problems at right back need to be addressed,” the report reads.
“Bradley’s season-ending knee injury in January has been compounded by the regular absences due to injury of Jeremie Frimpong, which have forced Dominik Szoboszlai and, latterly, Curtis Jones to be redeployed from midfield.”
Liverpool were linked with Lutsharel Geertruida in the January window but a deal could not be concluded for the RB Leipzig man who is on loan at Sunderland. However Slot’s former captain at Feyenoord could well be available for only £17m this summer.
Another Dutchman associated with a Reds’ move is Denzel Dumfries - who has got a tantalising release clause in his Inter Milan contract.
Another Serie A performer - Marco Palestra of Atalanta (on loan at Cagliari) has also been looked at.
Following Joyce’s endorsement we can expect action to follow for Liverpool as Hughes and Slot step up their squad planning for the 2026/27 season.
