Liverpool were hopeful of adding Marc Guehi to their squad right up until the final moments of the summer transfer window.

The 25-year-old agreed to join the Reds - with the Premier League champions agreeing to pay £35m plus £10m in add-ons for the Crystal Palace captain.

Owing to a lack of alternatives however the FA Cup holders called off the deal at the 11th hour - frustrating Liverpool’s chase for a new defender.

It means the England defender has slipped into the final 12 months of his contract and Palace could well sell him in January in order to avoid losing him for free.

Romano: It's not over for Liverpool and Guehi

Fabrizio Romano has been reporting on the deal all summer long - and claims that Liverpool will still be in the hunt for Guehi.

The table-toppers may well strike for a reduced fee in the new year or else wait until summer and convince the centre-back to move on a free.

“He might leave in January for a transfer fee, or he could leave in the summer for a free transfer,” Romano told his YouTube audience.

“On a free transfer, guys, the interest from Liverpool will be there, because Liverpool wanted Guéhi, considered Guéhi an important defender, and maintain Guéhi in their list.

“That’s for sure. So it’s not over between Liverpool and Guéhi, I would say.”

Liverpool don't have guarantees over Guehi

However, Romano also admits that the Anfield club’s chase could well be complicated by the presence of other suitors.

Guehi as a free agent is bound to have more than one club interest in him - and it’s been suggested that Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich as well as several clubs in the Premier League could attempt to entice him.

That leaves Liverpool without guarantees over Guehi’s arrival according to Romano.

"Many clubs" will come for Guehi

“At this stage we can’t say 100% he is going to Liverpool, because what I’m hearing is that several clubs around Europe, not only in England, are considering a move for Marc Guéhi,” he says.

“He’s seen as a big opportunity. A top defender like this available on a free — you don’t have to negotiate with Crystal Palace from January — well, that’s a big, big story, a big opportunity.

“And so for sure, keep an eye on the situation because Liverpool will be there in the race, but now they will have competition.

“This summer there was basically no competition because the player decided to go to Liverpool and there was an agreement.

“Now Liverpool will remain in the conversation for 2026, but now other clubs can try to join the race and try to outbid Liverpool.

“So let’s see what’s going to happen with this story, because I have a feeling that for Guéhi many clubs will come.”

Liverpool could exercise Quansah buyback clause

Liverpool may well need a new defender before long - considering Ibrahima Konate’s uncertain contract situation and the fact that the club have been content to listen to bids for Joe Gomez.

The centre-back picture is in flux since the departure of Jarell Quansah - although Liverpool may well exercise their buyback clause on the England man in 2027.
