Confirmed: Randal Kolo Muani is on Liverpool's forward shortlist
Liverpool have got a big problem to solve in the striking department this summer.
The No9 position was fortified heavily last year - with Alexander Isak signing from Newcastle in a £125m deal and Hugo Ekitike coming on board for £69m from Eintracht Frankfurt.
Isak has struggled during his first season with the Premier League champions - being restricted to four goals owing to severe injury problems.
Ekitike has suffered even worse - following a strong start to his Liverpool career. The France international is expected to be sidelined for up to a year having ruptured an achilles.
Given Isak’s lack of fitness it has been suggested that Arne Slot and Richard Hughes will need to rectify matters with a signing this summer.
Source backs up Kolo Muani reports
One surprise name on the list is that of Randal Kolo Muani. Sources around Juventus claimed that the 27-year-old was wanted by both Liverpool AND Juventus ahead of the summer window opening.
And now a UK source in Football Insider claims that the on-loan Tottenham striker is indeed on the Reds’ recruitment list.
Kolo Muani is spending the season on loan with the North London side from Paris Saint-Germain but is not expected to have a future with the French aristocrats.
He will therefore be available for a cut-price fee this summer - leading sporting director Richard Hughes’ intrigue.
“Randal Kolo Muani is a surprise striker on Liverpool‘s radar as they plan to sign a replacement for Hugo Ekitike following his serious injury,” the report reads.
“It remains to be seen if he will be part of Liverpool’s transfer plans, but a new striker is set to be signed regardless this summer, with Ekitike likely sidelined until next year.”
Kolo Muani could stay on the continent
Of course Liverpool will be working on an extensive shortlist - with Kolo Muani being only one name among many. The expectation in the Football Insider report is that Kolo Muani will miss out on his move to Liverpool as his future lies on the continent.
“He is known to be on Liverpool’s list of potential striker additions due to the likely lower fee involved, but is not a top target and seems set to return to PSG and stay overseas rather than remain in the Premier League,” the report reads.
But this is an interesting case to follow.
Kolo Muani is a far better player than he’s shown with Spurs - rising high throughout his time at Nantes, Eintracht Frankfurt and the France national team as well as a loan spell at Juve.
Capable of playing on the right-hand side of the attack as well as centre-forward - the attacker could fill in for both the injured Ekitike as well as Mohamed Salah - who is leaving on a free.
