Liverpool have got a new, all-star strikeforce following the conclusion of the summer transfer window.

Alexander Isak was the headline arrival - signing from Newcastle for a British record fee of £125m. That deal was far from straightforward - with Newcastle resisting right until the last minute.

The Geordies wanted two new strikers - which they got in the shape of Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade - and they wanted a big fee for Isak too.

Isak joins Hugo Ekitike in the Liverpool attack - with the Frenchman enjoying a stunning start to his Reds career.

Liverpool beat Newcastle to Ekitike

Signed for an initial £69m from Eintracht Frankfurt, Ekitike has got two goals in three Premier League outings - including one against Newcastle that really rubbed salt in the wound.

Why?

Because Newcastle were sure they’d wrapped up a deal for Ekitike earlier in the summer only for Liverpool to swoop in at the last minute.

As the Magpies were carefully assembling plans for an Isak succession - Eddie Howe’s team decided to try for Ekitike.

But instead of celebrating the arrival of the 23-year-old, Newcastle were STUNNED when Richard Hughes stole in with a late deal.

'Everything agreed' for Ekitike to Newcastle

And now agent Ali Barat - who represented Frankfurt in the deal - has revealed just how close Ekitike came to becoming a Newcastle player.

The talks were painstaking - according to an interview with Italian outlet Tuttosport - with Barat claiming that the deal to take Ekitike to St. James’ Park was all but finalised.

“Is there a player you would have liked to transfer during this summer transfer window but weren't able to secure?” the superagent was asked.

Hugo Ekitike,” Barat replied.

“I was working on behalf of Eintracht Frankfurt to bring him to Newcastle.

“I stayed in Germany for ten days. We agreed everything with the German club and the player, then Liverpool called him and he chose Anfield.”

Liverpool round off extraordinary summer

It demonstrates just how late Liverpool left it to actually formalise their interest in Ekitike. Although they’d had the forward on the radar since his days as a young player back in Reims, they waited and waited until it looked like he was on his way elsewhere.

This signing has been a masterstroke. It will provide Liverpool with quality up top - as already demonstrated - with the Reds now boasting a top alternative to Isak as well as a new option on the left wing if needs be.

Meanwhile Newcastle are left to count the cost of missing out on Ekitike - and had to settle for the overpriced Woltemade as a booby prize.
